Detroit Honeymoon - suggestions?

TMNT Bride, on July 16, 2016 at 10:20 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 7

FH and I are huge Red Wings fan, despite living in Central PA. FH isn't a tropical or beachy kind of guy and since we're getting married in Fall we decided we'd take a trip to Detroit a couple weeks after the wedding and go to a couple games and a Red Wings viewing party for the away game while we're there. We're planning on spending a whole week in Detroit so I was wondering if anyone from the area had some suggestions of other things to do while we're there.

I echo Greektown, and definitely eat there. The Henry Ford museum is a lot of fun, I've been going there for decades and always enjoy it. Look to see if Greenfield Village is open that time of year and has any events going on, also Belle Isle. Make sure you grab a drink at the Old Shillelagh Irish Pub. There is a ton of street artwork to see as well, like The Illuminated Mural, and Belt Alley (where I actually did my engagement photos!). I'm so excited you're coming to Detroit, there is so much to do and I hope you love it as much as I do. My fiancée lives in PA (Pittsburgh) and he loves when we get to spend time in the D!

If you have your passports you can also go across the river into Canada. Also make sure you don't stray too far from the greektown/ stadium area from downtown. I just moved here a month ago and admittedly try to go into downtown Detroit as little as possible but I've heard the river/stadium/greektown area is nice but u don't want to go too far outside of that area

I just googled some of these places and they look awesome! I've been to Detroit before but only for trips that were just long enough to take in a game so I haven't really been able to get the full experience. I'm excited to see some of these places now!

ETA - OGJaci I actually have been to Hitsville USA. I loved it! FH hasn't been so I might have to make a second trip there!

ETA 2 - ERBride I have my passport but FH doesn't have his yet. He's planning on applying for his next week and hopefully we'll get it in time!

Take advantage of the suburbs too! The Detroit Zoo is in Royal Oak. Somerset Mall in Troy (I once saw Miley Cyrus in Urban Outfitters there). Greenfield Village is DEFINITELY open that time of year. In October there are also a ton of cider mills/orchards that are a ton of fun.

Greenfield village and henry ford is awesome! If you like to gamble check out the casino. It really depends on the type of things you want to do. Up north there are a lot of awesome waterfalls and hikes you can take. The Detroit zoo is cool. There's this really awesome brewery in royal oak I believe I've never been but my FH had a good time.

I lived in Michigan for many years, there are loads of things to do!!! Silver lake is beautiful and remote, There are dunes but not the only attraction. I agree with others who mentioned greektown.. Also maybe frankenmuth or mackinac island. Traverse city has tons to do. There are Wineries in Grand Haven. An air zoo in Portage that's cool. The planetarium at MSU is amazing but needs an appointment. Balloon quest does hot air balloon rides in Fenton. There is a beautiful lighthouse bed & breakfast in Big Bay. Bear cave cavern and resort in Buchanan if you are earthy and enjoy the outdoors. If you ski Copper peak ski flying in Ironwood is amazing it's the highest ski jump on the American continent. Cranbrook house & gardens in Bloomfield hills is pretty and low key.. That's all I can think off.
