"Desserts only" wedding?

Kimberly, on July 16, 2010 at 10:06 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

Hey ladies- question: would it be strange/tacky to have a desserts only reception? We're trying to do the entire wedding for under $1200! Catering is a large chunk of the cost- and to feed as many people as he has in his family, it just won't add up. If we had a mid-afternoon wedding, would desserts only be ok?

What kinds of desserts? Cakes only or doughnuts/candies

I think if it's desserts only, it needs to be late enough for people to have dinner before. If it's mid-afternoon, the reception will run into dinnertime. Your guests will be hungry and grumpy, or they could even leave.

I think that would be a lovely way to stay within your budget. There are no rules that say you must put on a huge meal. It's your wedding, do it your way! Congratulations and welcome to WW. Smiley smile

I was thinking about an assortment of desserts and some light snacks... and was wondering about the whole timing thing. Thanks Maybe-a-Mrs- I didn't even think about it running into dinnertime!

I would say you'd want to start by 2pm for a "cake and punch" reception--as MaM says, you don't want people to get super hungry. Early afternoon receptions like this are pretty common traditionally, though.

A possible alternative if you want to start a little later (like 3 or 4) would be to have a selection of appetizers so that people could fill up a little more. It would still be less expensive than a full meal. I don't know how you're handling food, but one possibility would be to get deli platters and whatnot from a Sam's Club or CostCo or something, and then you could even have sandwiches.

(Not that there's anything wrong with just cake/other desserts in early afternoon, either--as I said, that's a perfectly acceptable wedding reception!)

I think it's a great idea, as long as it doesn't run into meal time!!

I think it would be great especially for a later wedding/reception. you could plan your day so the reception started at about 8 (start wedding at 6-6:30??)

or plan it so the reception will start at like 2 and not run into a meal time.

and put on the invites...dessert reception to follow ceremony

I love it!!!!! It's too expensive to feed everyone and if people don't like the food they are stuck eating it as a dinner/lunch. Almost everyone loves deserts. Just make sure to put it on your invites. I think its a great idea as long as you let your guest know that it is desserts only so that they can eat before. If you are doing mid afternoon you would have to have an end time so it doesnt run into dinner time, or have the ceremony at say 4pm and the reception doesnt start until 8pm so they have time to go to dinner inbetween?? or do the ceremony at 8pm and reception right after.

As someone who tries to watch her sugar intake- try to incude something other than just desserts. Fruit (chocolate fountain), chees platters or some other snack type food.

And it's all about timing. A short ceremony at 1, with the reception from 2-5 would be perfect. But try to specify a 'cake and punch' reception on the invites so people know to eat first.

My cousin just had (I know I am going to spell this wrong...) hor's de vors and a candy bar. My parents, who love to eat, were freaked but ended up surprisingly happy and full. I think that desert only is ok for VERY short receptions where everyone is mingling, no real dance time. Once they start to dance, they get hungry. Whatever you decide be sure to state in the invite that it is not a full meal at the reception or you WILL have people leave to go to food.

Hi there, my cousin actually did an all dessert wedding and it was beautiful!!! There are tons of ideas you can do, also with desserts maybe do some fruit.

Check out our website we do gourmet chocolates, have pretzels, marshmallows, cookies, graham crackers. We could make your day very special!

    Best Wishes!

It's sounds good, if you're planning on keeping it short and sweet (no pun intended), BUT I'll just give you a heads up by saying my Aunt's friend did this and a lot of people ended up not coming at all, and it ended really quick, about an hour I think. But you know you're people the best... I would at least have some "salty" foods there too, i.e. chips, pretzels, just in case some of your guests aren't in the mood for sweets, they'll have something else to munch on Smiley laugh

Thanks for all the advice, ladies! Like I mentioned before- we're trying to keep the budget below $1200 - TOTAL. Salts and sweets, a short and sweet reception...
