Dessert table or cake?

Chloe, on February 2, 2018 at 12:34 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 34
In addition to our small decorated cake, I am considering either getting sheet cakes or having a varied desserts table. (Either would be purchased from a grocery store) Anyone have any advice as to which would be more cost effective, easy and guest pleasing in the long run? I'm researching prices for cakes and desserts, (Sam's and Costco) but I'm not sure how to calculate the amount of mixed desserts I'd need to be able to compare. Also, would guests eat more dessert if there were multiple options as opposed to only cake?

Costco can help you to figure out with calculations.
The most recent wedding I have attended had a display of desserts, worked out great for variety- they also had gluten-free options which to my surprise was gone even before the others.

One thing to consider. If you have a small cake to cut, you should have cake for your guests. You can have a mix of desserts as well. We went for a dessert table as we didn’t really care about cutting anything. We weren’t going to do the feeding each other thing either but the photographer caught us at the dessert table so we fed each other our favorites (me=black and white cookie, him=cream puff). We also provided treat bags for guests to take home dessert. If you do that, wait until everyone has taken dessert and put the bags out after. My DOC put the bags out when dessert was put out and our guests were loading up like they were at the grocery store LOL.

Our venue had the option for us to do an Ice Cream Bar (which my FH knew I wanted over cake), so that's what we are doing. We are doing a small, 1-tier cake, for picture purposes and for people who may want cake...but other than that we decided against cake. Our Ice Cream Bar comes with choc,vanilla,straw....and about 10-12 toppings so that should be more than enough to satisfy our guests LOL

We are having a small cake just for us and the bridal party. Along with that we will have a variety of cupcakes and minutes pies for our guests. Later on we will make stores for those out camping with us.

Good point, it would be rude if we were eating cake and guests didn't have that option. I love how you fed each other your favorites! And what a great idea to get rid of the dessert at the end of the night by providing goody bags- we will be sure to put them out later on. Smiley winking

Thank you ladies for your input, I think I'm liking the idea of having a variety of desserts AND a few sheet cakes...plus my fiancé isn't as crazy about cake as some other desserts, so that way he'll have what he really likes too!

It's actually not too bad. it's an extra 5$ per person, so including dinner, open bar, and our ice cream bar- it comes out to like 107$ per person 😊

I'm having 5x 10inch decorated round cakes on different stands (one will have a topper), a display of chocolate truffles, chocolate dipped pretzels, cat shaped sugar cookies, and some gluten free mini cupcakes. Not everyone likes cake, so I feel like the truffles, pretzels, and cookies will offer some variety.

I made these treat bags from brown paper lunch bags I bought at the dollar store. It cost me $2 for 80. I printed right on them. It was a little tedious taping each bag to a sheet of paper to run them though the printer but the results were great.Dessert table or cake? 1

    This looks great!

How did you set up your table? We’re planning on having one but I’m not sure how to actually put it together. We have a DOC and right now I’m guessing we just trust her to handle it.

Probably not Gretchen! That stinks that you're limited to cake. We're getting married in my backyard so the sky's the limit! (Um, and our budget) haha.

My venue took care of it. The pastry chef dropped everything off and the venue had all the trays and stands. They did a great job!

Thank you. The desserts were amazing. We hired a pastry chef (my friend's sister in law) who is the head pastry chef for Citicorp's executive office. She blew us away! Best part is she made whatever we wanted and her prices were pretty reasonable, considering the high quality.
