Dessert and Cake??

D1, on September 13, 2012 at 6:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

I keep noticing on Four Weddings, that most brides are serving dessert and wedding cake at there reception. Is two desserts really necessary? What did you do or are you going to do?

In the south, we do both Wedding Cake (traditionally something other than Chocolate) and Grooms Cake (traditionally chocolate). I am not planning on adding an additional dessert after dinner is served.

I think it's more of a catering thing. For us, we are definitely having cake, but we thought it would be nice to have a chocolate fountain to go with the fruit during cocktail hour. We talked to our caterer and it's only going to cost $10 more total to just have a whole dessert bar that includes the chocolate fountain, brownies and mini cheesecakes.

My buffet also comes with dessert. If it didn't I thought about having a candy bar but not a separate dessert.

I am doing little three-tier fudge cakes and probably mini cheesecake squares along with cake. Originally I was planning on using the fudge cakes as favors, but I think it's morphed into a dessert bar because my mom wants cheesecake too Smiley smile

I went to a wedding earlier this year and they had dessert (are ally good cheese cake) and they had a beautiful wedding cake which was wheeled off early on in the wedding after the cake cutting ceremony. I never saw it again. We left at 11:30 and they still had not passed out cake. I can't see spending $100 or more on cake in addition to 100s more for dessert when I already have it. For this reason, I am just having wedding cake as dessert.

In my experience, very few have done extra desserts. Just wedding cake.

On the chocolate fountain front, personally I would never eat anything from a chocolate fountain. A) The chocolate is not the type that I like (high cocoa content) and B) too many hands going in to the food I will eat. No, no, no. LOL!

We are having a candy buffet, I assume most people will just grab a gift bag and grab some on the way out. We will have our cake. The groomscake will be served at the rehearsal dinner.

I think what you have to consider is a lot of the time the brides on there have really high budgets and the dessert comes with the plated meal.

We are doing cake, in an untraditional way. 12 8" gourmet flavor cakes. Also, because it is a fall wedding, I am insisting on pumpkin and apple pie. Though the cake company does have a caramel apple and a pumpkin cake I may opt for instead but I dunno. I love pie.

AND, on top of it, because it's a Halloween wedding, I'm doing a candy buffet which is the favor. I'm giving them bags and figure they can take it home or munch on it or whatever.

@Rowena G.: I bet it was a fake cake! I bet the tier they cut into was real, and they took it home, and the rest was styrofoam! That's a growing trend, and I don't get it. I'd be sad if I had to stare at a beautiful cake all night then not get any of it to eat! Lol.

We had a cocktail hour with 5 different hors d'oeuvres, a 4 course meal, and a dessert. I kinda felt that was enough food :-)

In a different type of a venue, I might have considered it, just because I love, love love desserts. But it's nowhere close to necessary.

    Not necessary at all.

We had wedding cake plus extra desserts just b/c we wanted them. Smiley smile But that's a cultural thing - at Polish and European weddings in general, there's usually a cookie or sweets table in addition to the cake.

I'm with Jennifer K on this. I've seen it both ways. 1) Brides are conscious of the fact that wedding cake isn't everyone's thing (I love it, is that weird?) and 2) It comes in a lot of catering packages, especially ones that don't offer a wedding cake.

@Shannah, your desserts sound delicious. And I too LOVE apple pie. As soon as this wedding is over, I'll be baking me some pies!

@D1, having multiple desserts is definitely NOT necessary. Our venue provides little Italian cookies/pastries for the table, in addition to the wedding cake. It's a nice touch, but if it wasn't included in our catering package, I never would have included it. And FH's family has this tradition of serving donuts from a certain bakery with every holiday meal. It's cute but kinda weird. The donuts are making an appearance at our wedding. Again, if it wasn't something that was important to them (and if they weren't footing the bill for the donuts) I would totally pass on it.

We are doing wedding cupcakes with a small cake for cutting on top. Here is a picture of the wedding cupcakes. The small cake on top will be covered in the same shade of purple (fondant) and the silver dregs.

We will be doing a dessert buffet instead of a wedding cake. For upwards of $500 dollars I could have 20 different cakes in all different flavors so why not? We will have 8 diffent cakes, a couple pies, cookes and dessert shooters all for the pice of one cake!

We are also having a carmel apple station
