Just Said Yes April 2020

Delayed Reception Due to Covid

McKenzie, on February 22, 2021 at 11:22 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4

Hi everyone!

M husband and I got married in April at the height of the COVID shutdown. We were obviously unable to have our reception and are waiting till July to have one in hopes the vaccine will be widely distributed in our state.

I'm looking for ideas for the reception, cute themes or decorations, or even games we can do. Since it's over a year after our wedding I'm trying to avoid some of the traditional reception things like cake cutting or bouquet toss, but I still want our guests to feel like they were able to participate on our special day. (we live streamed so people guests could participate in that sense) I'm just really looking for anything clever. I found some cute "we still do" decor items so anything in that ballpark that allows us to poke fun at the situation a little. (we're big into self-deprecation and humor in general)

I will even welcome ideas about post-pandemic themes.

NOTE: Please keep all comments positive. I've posted in other threads that just turned into people telling me I'm greedy for hosting a reception a year later. So please only positive suggestions.

First, I just want to say that I definitely do not think you're greedy for wanting to do a wedding reception a year after your wedding! It actually seems to be a common thing lately. COVID has messed up so many weddings over the past year, and it's totally valid to do a small ceremony, and then delay the reception until it's safe to host larger events. I've heard of many people doing this. You definitely deserve the celebration that you planned for.

Second, there are lots of fun things you could do! For COVID themes, search on Etsy for COVID wedding decorations! There's tons of things such as "Spread love, not germs" (typically found on hand sanitizer favors), or "A wedding so nice, we planned it twice!" For non COVID themes, what does your venue look like? And if you wanted to still do the bouquet toss, first dance, cake cutting, etc, I think that's totally valid as well. You could do a vow renewal ceremony if you wanted to, with the reception to follow.

I agree with Lisa!! A theme could be making lemonade from lemons 🍋🌿🌼 At our wedding my groom did a speech thanking everyone for being there and for the support we received and we had healthcare, military and essential workers stand for applause. We really enjoyed them being recognized ❤️

My husband and I are not planning a full blown reception, but rather watch parties in our hometowns to watch the wedding video film. If you have a highlight video or something like that, that might be nice to incorporate into the reception. You all could also play the shoe game and center your questions around everything you all have learned about each other since being married. I think that would be so much fun (and funny)!

I think these are all great ideas!! ❤️ The shoe game & highlight video ideas are also great for guests who are watching a livestream!

You could also have virtual guests send in messages for the guest book, or ask for date night suggestions or another fun prompt!

"You're Still the One" by Shania Twain would be the perfect song to dance to! 😄🎵
