Day after gift opening

OceanDreamin, on March 12, 2017 at 3:12 PM

As I am working on the itinerary my mother asked if we are doing a gift opening the day after the wedding. I know my brother did one but I am wondering if this is something that is common? Is it rude to not have one? If they are normal, who do you invite?

It's common here to open gifts with your immediate family and bridal party present. We're doing it only because we get the community room for free for a day and I had no other reason to use it haha. I offered it to my sister as a bridal shower option but she had another plan already.

I've never heard of this but it sounds pretty uncomfortable considering that most people will get mainly cash or checks at the wedding. We didn't open our gifts until we got back from the honeymoon.

This would be too much for me. I've never even heard of getting together for breakfast/brunch/ lunch the following day. :/

I had relatives that did this and it was horrible. They only included family and the BP, but I was a bridesmaid and it took HOURS... and to be totally honest most people just don't really care about seeing someone else's new blender.

I have only seen this type of thing done at the bridal/wedding shower. Everyone sits and watches all the gifts be opened and someone records who gave what gift for the thank you notes. Had not thought about it happening again after the wedding.

I've never heard of it and feel like it would be insanely boring for guests.

I wonder why this even became a thing? I find opening presents in front of others so awkward!

I never knew this was a thing. I would say open them at home.

This is done in my circle, and it's usually just closer family and out-of-towners who are invited.

Maybe it's regional because these are super common in my area. We are doing a gift opening brunch for family the morning after.

I went to my FSIL's and FBIL's gift opening party. It was boring and long. If we do have people present, only our immediate family will be there if they wish to see what FH and I receive. Otherwise it will just be us.

They are popular where I am from and hate it. Honestly don't care about what you got as a gift. And after a wedding I am ready to head home. So I am not having one

We are going to leave for our honeymoon right after the reception so the gifts will be brought back to our house and we will open them when we get back. We are going to take the cards with us to open on the plane ride (12hrs long) might give me a chance to write some TY letters!

I would also do it privately. I's awkward opening a gift that you dont like or feeling like you have to act a certain way

Again, thank you everyone. Sounds like it is across the board on the tradition around this one!

I'm not doing one. I think it would be weird. Plus we are leaving for our honeymoon the next day.

I have never heard of it. I would not enjoy this as the bride or as a spectator.
