Davids bridal dress question

bluswoman, on April 17, 2009 at 11:58 AM Posted in Planning 0 22

Hi everyone,

I got my dress from Davids bridal, and when I got it it was all wrinkled. I was told that I had to come back to get the bustle put on and have it steamed to get the wrinkles out. Now I can understand the bustle and having it hemmed but it seems to me when you pay this much for a dress it should come wrinkle free!! Is this the norm?

Ok, I just ran into the "wedding room" (aka kitchen...lol) and checked our DB attire. FG--unwrinkled, 2 BM--unwrinkled. However, I'm sure your wedding dress is 3 times this size so when they shipped it, they may have balled it up in a box or bag. It could also do with the fabric of the dress. What kind of fabric is it?

As with all things wedding, I have learned that nothing is free. If it were a higher-end bridal shop they may have done it for you no questions asked. It being DB...they may charge.

Oh well that makes me feel better, I was under the impression we had to pay for that also. The girl helping me has been a little pushy about buying things and I thought this was another added cost! thanks!

I think this is kinda the norm anywhere. There is no need to go through pressing it all out until just before the wedding. Why put the fabric through that process now when you will be getting it all wrinkled storing it, trying it on and doing alterations? You'd have to do it all again to make sure it's perfect for the wedding. I got my dress at a high end private shop, they are keeping my dress for me until just before the wedding but they will not be steaming it until then. I know with excitement you want to have it perfect now and take pics in it and stuff but I can't imagine that steaming the fabric again and again is good for it so better to wait till before the wedding so it is pristine the day of!

Yeah, its the norm. I bought my dress off the rack at Davids Bridal and it's wrinkled, somewhat dingy/dirty, and has some loose beading. I was told to bring it back 6-8 weeks before the wedding to have it clean, steamed, and the loose beading fixed. I was told it would be free of charge. My only concern is that I read that book "Bridal Bargains" and they said that Davids Bridal just throws your dress in a regular washing machine in the back of the store, steam it , and then a streamstress fixes what needs to be fixed but the book said that you would be better off paying someone else to do any sewing on your dress because the steamstress at Davids Bridal will botch your dress and your dress will be ruined so I'm a SCARED that that may happen to my dress.

I think alot of bridal shops do this. Personaly (as a bride) I think that since I dropped a few hundred or more on the dress things like that should be included in the price.

Bluswoman--- I meant that a wedding dress is usualy much larger than a bridesmaid dress (i was thinking along the lines of a ball gown). In no way was I implying that YOU are big....LOL....but just between us girls I HATE YOU and your size 4 body!!! Just kidding, all smiles ;=)

I just want to say that I had a horrible experience with David's Bridal. When I first started looking for a dress, I went there and, being in there for the first time, I didn't know that I had to register and meet with a consultant before trying on any dresses. So no one told me what to do when I walked in and when I went to the dressing room, they all looked at me liked I was stupid and giggled and told me to go back to the front of the store and register. I felt so disrespected so I just gave them their dresses and walked out. Such horrible customer service. I finally settled on an independent bridal boutique and my dress is gorgeous. I'm sure all of you who went through David's Bridal had a much better experience than I did. Good luck and congrats.

I did have a good experience at David's but being a plus size bride, I had little options. I held off getting one of their dresses and looked around and found my dream dress 50% off (see my post titled "Everyone..I Found My Dress! Plus A Wonderful Story To Go With It!").

The David's I went to told me that they would press the dress for free ONLY if I got the alterations done. The rules seem to be made up as you go along.

The shop where I got my dream dress helped me on where to get cheaper headpieces, veils, hairpieces to help make your hair look fuller, etc. My dress is very difficult to hem having hand-embroidered scalloped edging with gold thread (nothing glued or cheap on this dress) and needs to be hemmed at the waist. This is time consuming and the shop told me altering just the hem can be $300 and bustling my short chapel train up to $100. I called a local fabric store and found a couple seamstress's which quoted me $50-$75 for the hem. Shop around and save!!

I forgot to also mention, the consultant at the shop where I got my dress also told me that since I am having a destination wedding and traveling with my dress, I should have it pressed last minute. As soon as I get to the hotel room, take it out of the bag and hang it in the bathroom and spread in out and put towels or sheets on the floor. Turn on the shower on hot and close the door and allow the steam to do it's job. You can also purchase a small hand-held steamer and take it with you. I have yet to call our venue to see maybe if they have a service to press my dress up there since they specialize in destination weddings and those couples who elope.

Please PLEASE if you use an outside seamstress, make sure they have BRIDAL alteration experience. Believe me hemming a dress at the waist is tricky. It has to be done so that the side seams hang straight on the skirt and all the excess at the waist is distributed and or removed properly. For the hours involved in this type of "Hem" David's is not out of line. Just remember when they take it up at the waist they cut off the excess - if it isn't right there's not much you can do so having someone with experience in this type of hem is critical.

Bustle/Train QUESTION: I purchased my dress from davids' bridal and am having my alterations done there in a few weeks. My dress has a chapel train and I actually don't want a train or at most a sweep train but will go for one but a bit shorter than the chapel because we are having a smaller wedding. I have to get it hemmed in the front for sure because I'm short and am hoping they can shorten the train at least some inches if not all. Does anyone know if DB will hem the train????

Trust me when I say that if you are quoted $50 to $75 for a bridal gown hem (especially with the type of detail you described) than the seamstress either doesn’t do this often and doesn’t realize what she is getting herself into, or she doesn’t plan to do it correctly thinking you won't notice. I do this for a living and I wouldn’t even make minimum wage if I charged any less than $100! She needs to realize she’s not in China anymore. I don’t mean that disrespectfully, but a professional seamstress in America can not work for only a few $$$$$$$$ an hour.

David's Bridal lies. Go elsewhere. The same thing happened to me. My dress, and also my bridesmaid's dress, was wrinkled when I bought it from them, so on top of the appalling customer service (I was treated very rudely by them), I cannot believe they just managed to screw me over for a second time. They assured me I could bring my dresses in right before the wedding and have them steam pressed for free. Well, I attempted to do just that earlier this week, because the wedding is on Saturday. Now they are saying they cannot because I had alterations done elsewhere (by alterations they mean straps sewn on my bridesmaid dress because even though I ordered it with straps they didn't sew them on!!), AND they are now saying I should have brought the dresses in 2 weeks ago!!! So here it is - Christmas Eve - and I have to find another way to get the dresses steam pressed by the day after Christmas! Their slogan SHOULD be "You'll hate David's Bridal!"

I would never, ever recommend going to David's bridal to anyone. Have had the most horrible experience there. It is like an assembly line. Wrong dress size ordered first time around and they would not take it back because by the time my alterations came around and I tried it on it was too late. And I had lost weight in the meantime. Wrong size corset ordered, twice. Nothing but stress and aggravation. I will be contacting their corporate office after my wedding in 5 days. Bad business all-around.
