David's Bridal dress pick up question

So I got a call/voicemail (I couldn't answer it) informing me that my wedding dress was in (Yay!) And I could come pick it up within the next 7 days. I'm planning on picking it up this Saturday. I'm planning on picking it up this Saturday. I'm wondering if I should schedule an alterations appointment with them at that time so we can go ahead and get that started. I'm assuming that I will try on the dress to make sure it fits right when I pick it up.

If I don't schedule an alterations appointment, should I schedule a "bridal" appointment? My only concern for doing so is that I know they are pretty busy on Saturdays and I can have a bit more attention if I schedule an appointment. I called DB back to ask what was the best way to do this and the unhelpful answer I got back was, "anyway you want to."

So, David's Bridal brides! What was the process like for you when you went to pick up your dress?

Your wedding isnt until next october. It is definitely too early for alterations. I was told to wait until closer to 6 weeks before, which is what my bridal salon told me to do.

ETA: DB doesn't hold/store dresses for brides the way some boutiques will. this is why you were told you had to pick it up VS just trying it on.

When I picked up my dress from DB they offered to let me try it on. I declined, because 2 hours before going my puppy ripped off my toenail and it was gushing blood, so I didn't want to risk getting anything on the dress lol (it wasn't funny at the time). I was on the fence if I wanted to have DB do my alterations or a local shop near me. I asked if I could call back at a later date to schedule an appointment (if that was the route I decided), she said that was absolutely fine but fore warned me to do so asap, as they fill up quickly.

@Munchkin I knew that about holding the dresses, but it never clicked with me as far as wording goes. Thank you.

Thank you everyone for your insight!

Go somewhere else with alterations, they are terrible!

No worries just giving the heads up! I know it was a concern for me when I was shopping BC I don't have a good place to store my dress so I always asked!

Schedule an alterations appointment otherwise they'll assume you want to try on dresses and put you with a stylist not a seamstress

I agree with the posters on here saying that you should wait. I picked up my dress at DB and declined setting an alterations appointment. I'm shopping around and finding that my local shops (I live in Chicago) have better pricing and better reviews; your date is far enough away so do not let them pressure you. You can always schedule with them later if you want.

I did try it on before I took it out of the store. You never know if there's a tear/stain/missing button etc. Once it leaves the shop it will be difficult to get them to acknowledge that the defect was already there.

I went somewhere else for alterations. After the botched the hem on my friends dress, I knew I made the right decision.

I just walked into DB (when they told me I only had seven days) and pick it up without trying it. They told me to come back first week of January (7 weeks before my wedding) for alterations.

When I picked up my dress from DB they recommended I wait because my wedding is so far out. I'm getting married the day after you, so I would probably hold off for a bit.

Also, I'd check prices of other local seamstresses in the mean time, DB can get expensive quickly

I just want to thank everyone for their insight! I know now that I have a while before I have to worry about alterations, but I looked up local seamstresses and I found an awesome one nearby with rave reviews! She does great work and her prices are pretty reasonable. She gave me a timeline for working on my dress in time for the wedding. Once I get my DB dress, I will have a consult with her!

@KRM just so you know, when I picked up my dress in April, they allowed me to try it on and then take it home. You'll be able to do that as well.

I didn't even make my alterations appointment until mid-July at DB, but after speaking to the alterations manager at my location and having a huge communication issue with them, I decided to look elsewhere. Just communicate with the alterations department at your location and go from there!

You could go either way. When my dress arrived I called to make an alterations appointment. I have 2 more fittings then I can take it home. My 2 sisters are doing the same with their BM dresses. 1 of my bridesmaids just picked hers up and made an appointment to come back for alterations at a future date... that may be a better bet if you are worried about your size fluctuating.. I wish I would have done that but my dress has a corset back so I should be fine...

From what I read you should not get your alterations done at David's bridal and to take your dress somewhere else! I heard it's expensive and they've messed up a lot of dresses.

I ordered my dress & once i got the call i went to pick my dress up . I decided to try on my dress . Once i tried my dress on I scheduled an appointment for alterations. That's totally different than just a bridal appointment. I honestly think it's best to book your appointment during the week you get a lot more one on one !

Did you have to ask to try it on before leaving or did they offer you try it on?
