Davids Bridal disaster.. I broke down in tears

FutureMrsG, on May 26, 2017 at 9:24 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 52

Yesterday was supposed to be a fun day trying on dresses but I had a melt down in Davids Bridal. I've gained 60 lbs the last 2 years and I didn't realize how much different I looked until I got in front of a huge mirror in an ivory dress. The girl from DB was giving me dresses too small to try on so I freaked out. I couldn't even get them on to step out of the dressing room to get an idea. When i finally had enough champagne to calm down I found a dress I'm ok with but ordered it a size smaller and will add a corset in the back (I'm busting my ass at the gym for the next 5 months). It's not what I had envisioned at all but I have to feel comfortable. I don't like the neckline so they are going to alter it to a sweetheart neckline. I'm worried that alterations will somehow jack up my dress. What do you all think? I have a pic with a sash and no sash. Added bonus is that I found a flower girl dress that matches my dress exactly only with spaghetti straps added.

I really like the neckline on the dress right now, I'm having a problem envisioning a sweetheart but if that's what you want then go for it! The sash is a nice pop of color, I would go for it. And the flower girl dress is so cute!

I'm sorry it wasn't a super happy dress shopping experience, but you will look beautiful on your wedding day!!!!

You look beautiful! And that's a very pretty dress. I actually don't like thick sashes; I think they draw more attention to places we don't like. I think the dress could use a little bling or shimmer, so maybe a smaller sash or a blingy (thinner) belt? No matter what you choose - even with that current sash - you look BEAUTIFUL!

I think you look beautiful. Wedding dresses are so tricky. I normally wear a size 6, but was having a hard time with some size 10 wedding dresses depending on cut!

It's enough to make anyone self-conscious about their body. Also, I really hated DB. The only time I went, the lady kept ignoring my feedback (NO MERMAIDS) and kept bringing me dresses that were not at all flattering on my body.

Thank for the encouragement ladies. It was an eye opening experience. My MOH likes the sash but my bridesmaids think it makes the dress look less formal and more like a prom dress than a wedding dress. I agree with PP that the sash needs some bling. That's not the sash I picked just wanted It for reference. I wanted something with color but also with sparkle but it's the only one they had. It had a huge flower on it (hell no) but you can't see it because it's turned to the back.

I have no idea where that 60lbs is on your body because you look great. I love the dress on you. I really enjoy the simplicity of it. I think the sash is a great addition. I'm looking forward to seeing it altered! Congrats on finding a dress :-)

Chica, you look gorgeous! I totally get where you're coming from - in general I hate trying on clothes (especially wedding dresses). I can't tell you how many times I've cried in dressing rooms. Society is such an asshole to women about weight. Don't put yourself down. You're going to be a beautiful bride and your FH loves you - he asked you to marry him as you are. That's the mentality I'm sticking with, anyways. I love the dress, and I like the idea of a sash to add a little umph!

I'm glad you found your dress. You look beautiful! Shopping for wedding gowns is STRESSFUL so I understand how you feel.

You didn't ask, but if I may add some advice - I recommend getting the gown in your size then having it altered and sized down once it comes back. I fully believe you'll get to your desired size by your wedding, but you can always size down in alterations. Sizing up can be a bit of a challenge.

It looks beautiful! We are hardest on ourselves. Try to be nicer to yourself, would you say the things you say about yourself to your best friend? You need to be your best friend and change that negative body talk. Then work on the physical health part.

I love the idea of a blingy sash btw!

I think it's a beautiful dress, and I think YOU are beautiful.

When I went to DB, they didn't have all the dresses in my size, but they were able to clip them in the back so I could get an idea of what they looked like. It's just the process. Don't let it get you too down.

I also bought a dress that is 3 or 4 sizes larger than my typical size. I think wedding dresses just have more structure and are built differently. Don't let it get you too down.

    You are lovely.

I tried that one on too!

I think it looks nice. I actually regretted not getting it. And same as LMAC, I lost 110lbs and gained 70lbs back over 3 years. I know how you feel, it really sucks.

@jenny yes! What is up with that? I made it clear up front I was self conscious and needed dresses that were loose fitting. Why on earth would she bring me a dress that's a size too small to try on? She finally caught a clue and brought the dresses too big. I also got a lot of mermaid/trumpet style dresses. Totally not made for my shape.

@FutureMrsG that's where I gain weight too. But seriously, you look fantastic. Echoing @LilyBean, self love is the most important part. Your FH loves you exactly the way you are, so much so that he asked you to marry him just like this. Try and see yourself from a different perspective. I follow a lot of self love/body positive pages on Instagram and it's been great to get reminders of all these girls who love their bodies exactly the way they are.

PS, try the dress with a really awesome necklace or some flashy drop earrings (if that's your style). Accessories change everything!
