David's Bridal Alterations $$$

FutureMrsSmith, on January 7, 2015 at 6:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

Are they really that expensive? I heard they can be pricey, but all I need is a simple bustle, taken in (hopefully) a little and possibly have some cups sewn in. The length is perfect, so no worries there.

I am just having a hard time finding a seamstress in my area with great reviews. I've seen a bunch of seamstresses with good reviews, but then they always have a few reviews that are really bad. I just think it will be worth the extra dollars for that peace of mind.

Anybody have any experience with David's Bridal alterations? Crazy expensive?

ETA: When I tried the dress on and asked how much it would be for alterations, she kind of evaded and said that they can never really give an estimate because it all really depends on what you need done and that can only be determined when you have an actual fitting.

Best thing is to pbone and ask them that way you will have a good idea. I am sure it is slightly different in different areas.

Go at the beginning of the month. If they don't meet quota, they hike up their prices at the end of the month. Like a major amount.

That's weird, cause I got my dress at DB and the girl who was helping me brougth the seamstress out and she gave me a quote and exactly everything I was going to need. Sucks, cause I can't really remember now but will be like a additional $200 or more, but she was going to do a few things to it. I'd honestly just go with them, or sometimes they can refer you to a really good seamstress.

@future mrs.jkr-- beginning of the month. Got it! Thanks!

@Mayra--that's so strange, my consultant just kind of brushed it off.

@2brides2015--that would be great!! Thank you!

I just had my alterations done yesterday at Davids Bridal! I'm not gonna sugar coat it they were expensive. You have to consider your dress style first, I had several layers underneath that needed to be hemmed. Also my gown has rose like bunches in the bottom so instead of cutting from the bottom they had to bunch it up to make it look right. Hemming was $150, I had the sides taken in about 1.5 inches that was $60, the main bustle for the reception was $50 and each additional button they had to add was $7, i need 8 because of the style of my dress. All in all it was $330.00. My friend was married recently and spent over $500.00 at a boutique. The one thing you want to consider before going somewhere else is that Davids Bridal knows what they are doing and have worked with your dress before if you purchased it from them. I hope this helped Good luck with your up coming fitting!

I bought my dress there and had a bad experience, so I told them to forget it when it came to alterations. They were also WAY more expensive then what I have been quoted by the alteration ladies I have spoken to since then.

At the time I bough my dress DB did have an alterations person come out and quote me how much it would be to take up my shoulder straps which are about 2 inches too long-$35. $10-15 everywhere else. Also, I needed a bustle....they suggested a French bustle and I was clueless so I said "OK", I then asked the cost of that and the alterations lady told me how many "points" the bustle was and how much per point.....I paid less than $300 for my dress and that bustle would have cost MORE than the dress. I then asked what the other options were and the cheapest was $275. I have been quoted about $125 everywhere else, but that is without them actually seeing the dress.

I asked my friends on FB for seamstress recommendations and I called the ones that people just raved about. I chose a lady who works from home...and goodness is her house huge and gorgeous.

She has not altered my dress yet, but I had her hem two pair of dressy jeans for me and alter some trousers just so I could get a feel for how she works, how fast, her personality, etc. I was beyond pleased. She has 30 years experience doing alterations and I have since recommended her to several people.

@Sarah-- Thank you!! That helps tons! When I tried it on, she did show me what type of bustles I would be able to get and I liked the simple one the best, with just one button, hopefully I don't need more! And I think I will get it done there, just for the simple fact that, like you said, they know what they are doing and have more than likely worked on my dress before. Thanks again!

@Monica-- Sigh.....I wish I could find someone like that around here! I have yet to find one single seamstress with rave reviews. Maybe I'll find her before I schedule my DB fitting LOL.

I'm kind of nervous about this too. I was in a wedding recently and didn't want to pay David's Bridal to do the alterations, so I took it to this lady who works from her home. She did...a decent job. But I'm not sure if I would bring her my wedding dress. I think I might just suck it up and let them do it, despite the cost. :/

I only paid about $300 at DB to get it taken in and bustled (no hemming). They will not give you an estimate if you call, I've tried.

Don't just trust them automatically because they are a known brand or name; it doesn't meant the craftsmanship of the alterations would be any better. When I was looking for alterations, there were always negative reviews but I didn't blacklist a place unless a saw a trend in those reviews (everyone complaining that they got their dress back dirty, or everyone complaining about missed deadlines). If it was scattered here and there, I chalked it up to, "you can't please everybody." Shop around. Most places will give you a free estimate, and I'm a believer in the gut feeling I get in a place. I love the person I found, despite the few negative reviews on Yelp.

The alterations department at my local DB are excellent. I think it's because they're all old school Portuguese ladies! LOL! Their prices are a bit expensive though. When I picked up my dress, I was given a pamphlet with their starting prices. Maybe your store can give you one if you go and ask.

Strange--the fitting room at the DB where I got my dress had a chart on the wall with the exact prices for everything alterations. For what you're describing I don't think it would be too expensive--mine would have been, since I wanted an elaborate bustle. My MIL and I ended up hand sewing it ourselves, but if you're looking for simple it might not be too bad. They charged by the point--I think it was $60. for the bustle and three points, then $10 per point after that. Everything I have heard about DB points to every store being very different--I highly recommend you search for specific reviews about your particular store.

I had straps added to my dress, cups, hemming, and a complicated bustle and my alterations were $208. My dress isn't from david's and I didn't take it there either. I think that's one of their largest markups, honestly.

@FutureMrsSmith, I was quoted a price of $80 for my alterations at DB. All I need is a simple bustle and hemmed. This was the DB in Connecticut though so maybe it depends on the store.

I guess I had a different experience than others. I just went Saturday and have to have the sleeves undone to adjust the top and they have to pull the back down a little to have it sit flat. I paid $130. After reading previous posts, I was terrified it would be more than $300. So, needless to say, I was surprised how not expensive it was.

I had my fitting on Sunday. I expected my alterations to cost $300-400. I was pleasantly surprised that Davids Bridal charged $226 for hemming, 11 button bustle and inseam taken in.
