Date Change: Columbus Day?

SugarTango, on December 15, 2015 at 8:55 AM Posted in Planning 0 20

So FH and I are pushing our wedding date back a year for a host of reasons (sanity and stress being at the top of the list.)

Because of this we are looking at the 1st weekend in October of 2017 which happens to be Columbus Day. I don't think that is a huge holiday (like Labor Day) but I wanted to poll people and find out if you would go to a wedding the Friday before (so Friday, Oct 6th 2017) if Columbus Day is Monday, October 9 2017. I know some people find it annoying when others choose a holiday weekend to get married.

Thanks!

Not everyone gets Columbus Day off, but a Friday wedding shouldn't be too big of a deal. If it were on that Sunday, then some people may have an issue.

I had a Saturday wedding on Columbus Day weekend. I would go to a Friday wedding, but probably not a Sunday wedding since I wouldn't have Monday off.

I know I work in healthcare and don't get Columbus Day off. If you were my friend, I'd absolutely go to a Friday wedding Smiley smile at the end of the day the people who truly want to be there will make the effort

I don't get Columbus Day off so it would be like any other weekend to me. I probably wouldn't even know that was the weekend before Columbus day.

ETA: to answer the question yes I'd go to a wedding the Friday before

I don't get Columbus Day off so a Friday wedding would depend on how close of friends we are and/or how close I am to the location.

I'm getting married the Friday of Columbus Day weekend! I have another friend that was also married on the Friday of Columbus Day weekend in 2014. We were definitely not annoyed attending her wedding. It actually made for a nicer trip as we were off that Monday. The people that weren't off that Monday were able to travel back on Sunday and not have to worry about waking up late to travel the day after the wedding (if they had wed on a Sat). Columbus Day is not a big holiday so I don't think a lot of people make plans for that weekend. I know a lot of people choose Friday weddings in general because they can be less expensive too.

Most people in the private sector do not get Columbus Day off. So it would be a regular Friday wedding. Although Friday weddings aren't ideal if the person meant a lot to me I would be there with bells on whateverv day it was.

Many people don't get Columbus Day off, so a Friday wedding is just a Friday wedding. I do get Columbus Day off, but my H doesn't so I'd definitely go to a wedding that day.

Yea, not tons of people get that day off. H is in government and he even has to work. I'm in one of the few financial institutions that also don't get it off. In fact, I have never gotten in off in any of my jobs. This being said, I wouldn't nor would anyone that works Monday consider it any different than any other Friday wedding

I don't know anyone who really considers Columbus Day a holiday. In fact, here in Minneapolis we officially celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day instead!

My wedding was the Friday after Columbus Day this year. No one mentioned or cared. I don't think most people get it off so its not like you are ruining someones long weekend plans to leave on Friday-Monday. I think you are fine, its no different than any other Friday wedding.

Very few ppl get that day off. it depends a lot on what state you're in. I work for the govt and we got that day off and I was shocked. But for a lot of govt agencies its optional. This year was odd bc July 4th was a Saturday so a typical holiday and some ppl didn't get off which allowed for a open holiday.other than that i dont think it will be received by invitees any differently than any other friday wedding.

This holiday is a crapshoot with people, as others said, some get it, some don't. Ours was over the Columbus Day weekend as well (Saturday) and I think between letting people know the wedding date early on with save the dates and those who had the holiday, we didn't have attendance problems because of it being that weekend.

I would imagine that those closest to you will make it work. I do agree with other posters that unless you work for a school or a bank or something you don't often get this day off so it probably won't affect that many people.

I'm getting married the Saturday of Columbus day weekend this coming October, and while I thought I'd hear a few people complain about it ruining their camping plans, I actually didn't hear a single thing. Where I'm from that weekend is usually a big camping weekend, which is why I was worried.

Our wedding was the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend, and there didn't seem to be any issues. Because it's such an odd holiday I think you have to treat it as a work day just to be safe.
