Dance lessons for first dance?

Private User, on June 1, 2014 at 2:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Did you / are you planning on taking dance lessons for your first dance? FH is not really the dancing kind, but he can do a lot better with a few lessons, but I was wondering how to even go about looking for this.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

We took lessons, it was good, but we totally felt that we paid too much. It was fun, and we looked better than if we hadn't taken lessons, but after our package was over, they tried to sell us more. But look for a ballroom type studio such as Fred Astaire or Arthur Murray Dance Studios. The instructors were great, and it was fun, just expensive.

You can find deals on groupon for an introductory lesson to see if you like it, just be prepared for a very hard sell afterwards. We paid $30 for the groupon lesson, and then for the packages, it was about $100 per lesson after that!

FH loves to dance. He really wants to take lessons before the wedding. I think it's cute. Haha.

We did, we found a local studio that helped us out. They only charged us for the lessons they were teaching FH how to dance (poor guy has little rhythm) and the rest of the weeks if we wanted to use the studio to practice our dance it was free. We are going a couple more times before the wedding! FH is going to go practice with his mom when she flies in. He is really happy he can finally dance with me without stepping on my feet.

No. TBH, I dislike rehearsed or choreographed first dances because it looses the genuine, romantic moment. I much prefer the newly weds to just sway back and forth sort of slow dance.

@doeydo - I am undecided for the same reason! I figured, even if we rehearse, it will be for only part of the song, may be the first couple mins or some key moves..and then just let the moment take over.

We did, through Arthur Murray. Had a blast too. It was a standing date night. Our dance wasn't choreographed, but we learned the foxtrot.

I wanna take some lessons but FH doesn't see the point even though he already knows he can't dance to save his life. Everything is about time for him.

My FH is not a good dancer and he has no rhythm. But that's one of the things I love about him and its hysterical to watch him dance (laughing WITH him, not AT him!). I agree with doeydo in that it's just not genuine and the rehearsed aspect takes away from the special moment - for the newlyweds and the guests.

I have taken a few dance lessons and merengue and salsa and used to dance in competitions at school and college.. so, I know we can make it look not too rehearsed or choreographed.

I am just afraid that he will not know what to do at all..and look awkward during our first dance or me having to lead. I just want us to be familiar with the song enough to move around without being conscious of all the people watching us.. so we can enjoy that moment with each other.
