Dance floor, necessary?

Michele, on June 17, 2013 at 7:11 AM Posted in Planning 0 19

So my venue wants to charge me $300 for a wood dance floor to be put down, I know it is nicer and easier to dance on then carpet, but is it necessary? Help!!

An open area on the carpet does not say " dance on me" like a dance floor does. You better get the dance floor if you want dancing to take place.

That seems like a lot, but if you plan on dancing then I would say yes.

If I went to a wedding with no wood dance floor (or any dance floor) and there was just carpet my first thought would be...."umm, I guess we aren't dancing..."

Dance floor is a must. I saw a tent wedding with no dance floor once. Guests had to dance on the grass. It was so awkward haha

Thanks girls. Trying to cut some things out..money is a bit too tight right now. Guess I will have to go back and see if there is anything else I can cut.

That's a good price for a dance floor. That is normal.

I went to a wedding once where someone cheapened out and scrapped the dance floor and they basically just paid for the DJ as ambiance. There was almost no dancing after the special dances.

I would leave the dance floor and cut elsewhere.

We aren't having a honeymoon, we did DIY centerpieces and other decorations, the wedding is small, about 50 guests including wedding party, not sure where else to cut. Any suggestions?

There are pros and cons to both. We are having a small wedding too 56 ppl. I discussed it with friends and family going to wedding to get their input, the all said they were fine with the carpet. The carpet is flat and i moved around with my heels on and didnt fid it hard to dance on. The last dance floor we danced on started falling apart and the venue servers were hammering it back together all night. Plus people spilled on it which made it sticky and hard to move on.

We are debating the same thing. There is a cemented area by the B&B that we are plannig to use but a dance floor in the tent miught be nicer...decisions, decisions.

Michele, if there are only 50 guests, will they be more interested in chatting with each other or dancing?

If the only dancing will be the special dances (first, parents), you can probably skip the dance floor.

Michele, I'm practically always with the others that you should have a dance floor but I'm also sensitive toward your budget concerns. If you need to cut the dance floor, then cut it. However, don't just leave it up to chance. Given yours is an intimate event, simply explain the situation to a few of your guests and ask them to help you out to get people out to dance. A few good motivators will often work in absence of a wood dance floor.

Thanks everyone for your input. I think I will call the venue and see if they think it will be a problem with the people dancing on carpet. I know may family, and after a few drinks, I am sure they won't even notice there isn't a dance floor! Lol. My other concern is with spilling drinks on the carpet, if it stains, am I responsible?? Ugh!

We talked about this too and our friends said they didn't care they would dance on the carpet either way the carpet at one venue we looked at was very flat so heels wouldn't be a problem. So I would say it would depend on the group. Never knew people would see carpet though and just not dance. I don't need a dance floor to dance personally shoot, I dance in my carpet at home just fine lol.

I love to dance, I couldn't imagine not having a dance floor. However, I understand money is tight. People will dance on carpet, I have been to functions where theere was no dance floor but we danced anyways. If the DJ is hopping the crowd will move whether sand, carpet or dance floor

That's exactly where I am Hot chocolate. At first I was like, how can we have a wedding without a dance floor..but now I'm not so against it. Thanks everyone for all you help! I really appreciate all of the comments!
