Dance Floor: How many square feet?

Lacy, on December 13, 2010 at 10:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 20

My family isn't big on dancing, but I would like a space designated as a dancing area since we will be having music play in the background. The rental company has a black & white dance floor for $12/sq. ft (uninstalled) or $16/sq. ft (installed). If it is just the squares, I'm sure we can do that ourselves. But that's not the point. How many square feet do you think we would need for a dance floor? We are expecting between 64 and 72 people.

According to a website I found, each couple (50% guests) need at least 9 sq. ft. of dancing space. I just figured that up and that would be over $3800 just for the dance floor! That can't be right!

    I just realized I misread. It is $12/sq. YARD not per sq. FOOT. That brought it down to a much more reasonable $1300! NOT! Why is it so expensive????

    I tried to look up the dimensions of the dancefloor at my venue and got nothing Smiley sad But I would estimate it to be about five yards by six or so... does that seem right?? I remember it being pretty large.

    Is that per person or in total?

    Hmm... The dance floor at my venue was 15 feet by 15 feet, or 5 yards by 5 yards. That would be 25 square yards for 60 people. However, our guests were older, so probably fewer of them were dancing than might be the case at yours.

    Our bedroom is about 10' wide and by the looks of it, I think a 10'x10' dance floor would be too big.......Wow this is hard. I just cannot see paying more than $200 for a dance floor, which would equate to 7'x7'. Since we are expecting between 64 and 72 people, and most are not going to be dancing, I think that will be big enough. What do you think?

    This is a terrible question since I am an accounting major and am supposedly good at math, but it is 10 p.m. here. Do you multiply the feet together and then divide by 3 for the total yards needed or do you divide each side dimension by 3 to get each side dimension as a yard before multiplying together. The reason I ask is because:

    15'x15':

    15'x15'=225 sq. ft --> 225/3=75 sq. yards x $12/sq. yard = $900

    OR

    15'x15'/3--> 5 yards x 5 yards = 25 sq. yards x $12/ sq. yard = $300

    So which is it lol?

    Take into consideration that not all of your guest will dance at the same time, if at all. When we were going to have our wedding outside, we opted for a 20/20 but we had 200 on our guest list (included children). The installation is crazy easy.

    See if there is a Walker Lewis Rental or A-1 Rental in your area. With a guest list of 200 plus WP, we still weren't looking at paying more than $300 for our dance floor. Btw, A-1 is cheaper than Walker Lewis.

    I found this to be a very helpful guide to figuring out how large your dance floor should be:

    Ours will be 20x30 but we are hoping dancing will be a big part of our evening.

    I don't remember how many square feet or yards our dance floor is but I think it can hold up to 70 people at the same time, I don't have the exact number, but I'm curious your venue doesn't have one, when I was looking for venues all of them include the dance floor, I can't help on the price thing cause I'm not sure

    The smaller the better!

    Here's why.

    1. Smaller gives you the illusion that the floor was packed.

    2 Guests are more inclined to join in when the floor is packed.

    3. Too big of a floor creates just the opposite.

    Dang...our venue does not have one. The ceremony and reception are in the keeping room of a B&B. I just figured we would dance on the rug. The owners do it often when they have events with a DJ. I would hate to think I have add something else to the budget. UGG I think I will wait until after Christmas to discuss this with the FH

    We're having a 12x12 foot dance floor for an unenthusiastic group of 100 people. We were going to do a 12x15 but decided against it since nobody's gonna dance anyways and if the floor is smaller it will look like it's more packed even if only a few people are groovin' Smiley smile Good luck!
