Curious? Is it tacky to ask for addresses through FB Priv. msg?

RhnCasi419, on January 1, 2015 at 8:59 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

So, I've begun the gathering addresses phase of this planning. I'm becoming quite the organizer. I will be sending out save the dates by the end of this month/into early February. I have a date with Michaels Crafts store tomorrow for card stock and padded envelopes for my cute wooden heart magnets. From there I send them out. All this morning I've been private messaging those on my friends list who will be invited to the wedding. I simply wrote that we are gathering addresses of only the coolest people we want to invite (I tried to be funny there) and they are some of them. Could you please send me your address. One thing I have learned is my background in real estate law has come in handy. Most of the addresses I searched on the public site for land records and got addresses that way. Very useful tool. In Massachusetts it is called Masslandrecords.com. You just plug in the last and first name of the person and all their real estate records come up and addresses.

I plan to do the same. For many of my cousins, that is the only up to date contact I have for them. If its tacky, whatever, because that is the only way the will get an invitation.

I think it's fine. Some guest might feel uncomfortable sharing that information over Facebook or the internet and might be more comfortable with giving a phone number instead. You could also request addresses through email, make phone calls and team up with a relative who has everyones contact information. We are doing a combination of things.

I've done this with a few of my cousins and they were just happy they were getting invited.

I don't think so, I did it, but I also gave my # incase they dodnt want to share over the internet like mentioned above. 2 or 3 people texted me their addresses, the rest gave me theirs through FB messenger

I did something similar, but instead of them emailing me all back the addresses, I used Postable. You give them a link and it sends them to your private page where they can fill in address, phone number, email and birthday. I haven't used Postable to send cards or anything (at least yet), but I do like that it emails you when someone has a birthday coming up. I think WeddingWire has a function that lets you email to request addresses, but you have to send individual emails instead of the same link to everyone.

I think it's fine; I'd just keep the rest of your wedding info on the hush on FB...

Thanks everyone! You can never be too sure with anything involving wedding planning, you know? My thoughts were basically the same ... how else would I find current addresses, right? Nowadays, everything is through social networking sites. Guess it is a plus during wedding planning, just making sure it wouldn't considered being tacky. But really though? How else? Texts are fine too I am gathering. Just stressing a little that I am really sending out save the dates, its getting real now folks Smiley smile

Absolutely Celia! I only sent a few private messages asking for addresses. Most I already know, texted, or looked up on a real estate public website Smiley smile I have been sooooo hush hush about my wedding on FB, and will keep it that way! Wedding talk is what WW is for! Hehehe Thank goodness for this site!

Totally used it...worked pretty well. I also used a website (chimpmail.com) address collector

Not at all. I started doing that to collect addresses for STD's.

I'll be doing this too. It's my only form of contact with most of my family (cousins, aunts, etc)

I did that too...just made sure they were individual private messages, not one big group message (which was done to me...).

I don't think its tacky at all. I send Christmas cards and already keep a pretty good, updated address list but there were still some people (like some of my parents' friends, some of my fiance's college friends and single guy friends) that we still needed addresses from. We asked most people through fb message but we sent a message to each one of them individually instead of a mass message, since not everyone wants to put their address out like that. People we know that don't really use fb we texted!

I did this for anyone whose number I didn't have who was more or less my age, although I did end up having to message a couple of people my parents age because my parents were not getting me their addresses in time.
