Cupcakes vs. One big cake

I’m curious as to what everyone’s opinions are. Do you prefer a big elegant cake or a smaller cake with a bunch of cupcakes? We will have a lot of guests (150+) and I’m leaning towards cupcakes because you can get a lot of them and there are more options with cupcakes. What are people’s thoughts on...

So I love the big cakes at weddings and we're having one at ours. With that said, the one downside to cake is the servers usually then pass out slices and leave them at the tables. At one wedding we went to one side of the room got one flavor, and the other side got the other flavor. My favorite flavor was across the room so I didn't get to have it and I didn't care for the flavor I got. A cupcake display would help this because guests can serve themselves and decide on their own flavor. To counter this, we plan on asking the servers at our venue to alternate flavors at the tables so people can trade throughout the table if they prefer.

We are doing a small 6" cutting cake and then cupcakes for everyone. I think it is a great way to get a lot of variety for the guests.
