Cupcakes vs. One big cake

Becca, on January 15, 2019 at 1:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 23
I’m curious as to what everyone’s opinions are. Do you prefer a big elegant cake or a smaller cake with a bunch of cupcakes? We will have a lot of guests (150+) and I’m leaning towards cupcakes because you can get a lot of them and there are more options with cupcakes. What are people’s thoughts on the matter?

I'm not partial either way as a guest, I'll eat anything offered of cake variety! I like that cupcakes offer more flavor options but there is something about watching a couple cut into a big beautiful cake! But, I think I'd go with whatever is more cost effective and fits your vision better!

You could always do a smaller fancy cake to do the traditional cutting and then have a cupcake table! I love cupcakes!

The cake comes with our venue so either option won’t change the price. I just didn’t know if people had preferences haha we would still have a little cake tho regardless! I was looking at something like this and we would cut the top one or something

Were doing a sheet cake from Walmart that will say congratulations crystal and Zachary and when we get the venue we will stick our topper on. We both believe its outrageous to spend 200 or more on a cake lol

We are doing a small cake for us (we aren't big sweet eaters but still want to revel in all the experiences & traditions that having a wedding offers) and a variety of cupcakes for our guests.

I liked the idea because I could get several different flavors to offer our guests and we wouldn't have to go through the whole "let's cut this giant cake and hand out tiny plates to everyone." Now they can just come up as they please and choose which flavor they'd like. Plus...cupcakes was about half the price than what a cake would have been...sooo I really saw it as a win-win for us.

This is our big debate. We both like cupcakes but we also like the idea of a traditional wedding cake. If we do do cupcakes we’ll have a small fancy cake for the cake cuttinf

I prefer cupcakes. Easier to eat & usually a selection of flavors. We are doing a small 1 tier cutting cake for pictures, then a mini dessert bar with cupcakes, cookies, brownies, and cake pops.

I prefer cake! Sometimes cupcakes come out dry even though there are typically more flavor options. I personally just want a big tiered cake at our wedding because all of our friends didn't have one and I think it is a staple of weddings that might be going out of style? Who knows! They had cupcakes or a small cutting cake and sheet cake. Cupcakes you also need more. I have always tried more than one flavor whereas cake the majority of guests only eat one slice.

I very much prefer actual cake but I am a baker and a self proclaimed sweets aficionado lol that said if I went to a wedding that served cupcakes instead of cake I would by no means be upset! Unless you feel strongly one way or another, I would choose based on price.

We're doing a small cake to cut and then cupcakes for our guests. It just seems so much easier than having to cut and serve 150 pieces of cake!

I think this is a personal preference, that guests probably won't care too much either way. I think the trend now is doing a smaller cake with cup cakes or sheet cakes...mainly to save money. My personal preference is a big elegant cake, but price is our issue. We met a baker and told her our vision, and we will have around 200 guests. In order to feed that many people, we would need a 5-tier cake. She quoted us $636 for a 5-tier cake made exactly how we want, we can even do different flavors and fillings for each tier. As a cheaper option, she quoted us $420 for a 3-tier and 3 sheet cakes. So, for our situation, there is around a $200 difference between the two options. We ended up deciding to go with our dream 5-tier cake, and it actually ended up costing slightly more than the cheaper option. Since we paid full price up front, she applied a discount and put our $20 tasting cost towards it, and the total came out to $465.

Is cost an issue? Because we didn't find a big cost difference between the two options. Do you prefer the look of a big cake vs a small cake and cupcakes? Are you basing the decision on flavor options/variety? Because you can do multiple cupcake flavors or make each cake tier a different flavor.

My SO been having this discussion today lol. Neither of us really eat cake so we weren’t sure what we wanted. Personally, I think traditional cakes can be beautiful but I think cupcakes are a bit more fun and I like that oh can mix up the flavors and how you display them. I’m pretty sure we’re going with cupcakes and an ice cream sundae bar (super excited) because we’re definetly ice cream people but wanted something cake-y for guests too.

As a guest, I would complain either way.
For my wedding, I think we'll just do a cake. We have had any cake tastings or consultations yet so our ideas my change.

I have never liked a cupcake at a wedding. Each one was dry and no flavor.

I'm a fan of real cake.

It's truly up to you! We're having a 3 tiered cake and assorted desserts like cupcakes, brownies and blondies.

Yes, this is what we are doing too. Better dessert selection for the guests.
