Cupcakes — how many?

Gwendolyn, on January 23, 2019 at 9:30 AM Posted in Planning 0 7
My fiancé and I have decided to get a small cake for us to cut ourselves, and then do cupcakes for the rest of our guests. We’re having about 160 attending he wedding, so how many cupcakes should I order?? Do I go for 180?? Or is that not enough?

We are doing a small cake to cut and doing donuts. The place we are getting them from suggested about 1 and a half donuts per guest so we are getting 2 per guest and then probably a dozen extra just in case (so we can take them home lol). I would ask the place you are getting them from they should have an approximate amount that they go by.

We are doing the same thing you are. Our cupcakery suggested for the regular size cupcakes to figure 3/4 of a cupcake per person.

Not everyone will eat cupcakes so I think you’ll be safe to order 150.

You should budget 2 per guest especially if you are going for more than 2 flavors. Most guests will see cupcakes and chose more than one because of the variety, even if they are full size.

I was told to plan on 1.5 regular size cupcakes per guest.

I would take your final guest count and reduce by about 5. So if 160 RSVP yes, most likely you will have at least one no-show (most people do). Plus most likely not everyone will eat a cupcake. When I worked for a catering company, there was ALWAYS dessert left (regardless of cupcake, cake, donut bar etc). Unless you want tons of leftovers and can take them home, which I wouldn't, I would get 5-10 fewer cupcakes then the number of people who RSVP yes. The worst that can happen is someone doesn't get a cupcake, which is OKAY. If everything else is fun and great, people will accept not getting a cupcake. Also, ask your bakery and/or caterer. They are professionals and know how much people tend to actually eat at events like this.

We're doing cupcakes too! Love finding fellow cupcake brides! Our wedding is going to be about half the size of yours and we did two dozen in four different flavors so 96 total. We're also going to have a small cut cake that I think will feed like 12, if I remember correctly. It's a little over the guest count with the cake included, but my plan is to find little take out boxes so people can take one to go if they want to try a different flavor.
