Cupcakes & cookie table advice

FutureMrs, on October 18, 2017 at 3:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

I have decided to have regular sized cupcakes at my wedding next year. But I have also committed to having a cookie table! We are shooting for 170 dozen which would be our 'to go' favor and allow each guest (including children) about 12-15 cookies each.

My question would be how many cupcakes should I get in addition to cookies? We decided against a traditional wedding cake because its much easier to just grab a cupcake. Should I get the standard 1 cupcake per person or less? I do not want to have an overwhelming amount of cupcakes go to waste, because well its just like throwing money away.

I have read where some brides purchase 2 cupcakes per guest or only purchase about 75% of their guest list.

Anyone have any experience with this?

    That's too many cookies.

1 cupcake per person and cut the cookies by half.

Yes, some will have 2 and some won't have any. don't purchase more cupcakes than the number of guests. my wedding is 200 with only cupcakes for dessert and my baker suggested ordering no more the 190 cupcakes because several people won't even have 1, I am doing to-go boxes though and doing 200-220 cupcakes instead of favors though.

I would say if you're doing cookies and cupcakes do about 60%-75% of your guest list in cupcakes and 60% in cookies. so for example if you have 200 guests 120 cupcakes and 120 cookies. To go boxes instead of favors are an awesome idea if you're unsure about how many will get eaten and don't want to be wasteful. Or cut the cookie table or the cupcake table and just do one or the other as favors.

I feel like 12-15 cookies per person and at minimum 1 cupcake is a lot of sweets. Maybe cut the cookies back a little and do one cupcake per person.

Yeah I love cookies but there's no way FH and I could take 12 cookies each.

I was reading about cookie tables as favors and literally every cite suggested 12-15! Thanks for the input ladies!

We did a dessert table with to-go containers as well. We allotted for 4 cookies per person, and 2 brownies, 2 cupcakes and 2 ladylocks per guest. It was plenty, even with people taking them home. We had at least a dozen cookies to take home for ourselves.

I also opted for a dessert table in place of cake. By my calculations, you are expecting about 150 - 170 people, correct? 170 dozen cookies is WAAAAAY too much.

Let's say you have 150 people. I'd say 100 cupcakes and 40-45 dozen cookies should be more than enough. If you want a cupcake per person, cut the cookies down to 30 dozen.

I had 73 people and ordered 23 dozen items (a mix of cookies, mini cupcakes, mini donuts, mini eclairs and cream puffs) and 7 pies. I also provided "to go" bags and we had 2 pies and probably a mix of 3 dozen items left over. And believe me, my group loves to eat! Basically, we figured 4 items per person and there were leftovers.

    Cookie tables are awesome!

I would definitely scale back on the cookies though, 12-15 per person (including kids) is too many cookies.

Are you serving a lot of food that day? Your guests might already be full from everything else. I would do one regular sized cupcake per person and probably at least half the amount of cookies and have the to-go boxes or bags for guests to take some cookies or even leftover cupcakes home with them.

So 3-5 cookies per person total? What if they eat 3 and want more to go? And 1 cupcake per person.

By the way, I made "to go" bags out of brown paper bags from the dollar store and they worked great!

I'd allot 1 cupcake per person ... MAYBE 1.5 per person max. SO MANY COOKIES!!! 170 dozen is over 2,000 cookies, haha

Agree with pp's. 3-5 cookies per person I still think you'll have plenty leftover. Some people won't eat any cookies, some people will only eat 1, etc.

We had mini cupcakes (about 1/3 the size of a standard) and had enough for 4 per person. We also had a tier cake big enough to serve half of our guests. We had no leftovers.

    How big are these cookies?

I am no help. All of my aunts told me well need a dozen cookies per person too. I thought it was ridiculous but we will have boxes for people to take them and one thing I know for sure is my family will stock up on the cookies

Holy cow batman! that's a lot of sweets!

I'd also read to expect 1.5 cupcakes per person. Our plated dinner includes a dessert so we are figuring one per person and we'll have some take away boxes.

Think about your group, you don't mention the overall size, how many kids etc. Do most have a sweet tooth?

I'd maybe figure one cupcake and one cookie per person? Are you going to pre-package the cookies for take away? If you allow people (hopefully not kids) to package their own that makes it infinitely more difficult to estimate since some people will absolutely take a dozen home. If you do allow self-packaging, I'd recommend a directional sign or some sort.

Thanks for all the advice! I love the idea firstoneat56! Cute bags!

I have seen some frugal displays and then some with so many cookies left over! I would say the cookies will be standard size. My mother is baking them. (She’s great at it). She has baked a lot before for others. I just don’t want to run out. I work part time at the Priory here in Pittsburgh for weddings and I’ve seen cookie tables run out immediately after dinner. Most of the guests had to go boxes with at least 6-8 cookies and ate some at dinner! Plus the bride had mini cupcakes! I guess it depends on the crowd. But I will definitely scale back on the cookies. I was just trying to get my head around ratios Smiley smile

That is probably too many cookies. We are doing a mix of cupcakes and wedding cake, but there will be one serving of cake-product for each guest. In addition, we will have cookies, ice cream, s'mores, and cannoli.
