Cultural traditions in programs

Christine, on October 11, 2019 at 1:18 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 13

Hi everyone! I need some help as it relates to adding some information of cultural traditions in programs. I’m of Lao descent and my future hubby is Caucasian. We’ll be doing a traditional Lao ceremony which has similarities to Thai and Indians weddings. I want non-Laotians to have some idea of what’s going on and I wanted to know what other people have done in the past whether it was adding information to programs or talking about it the day of the wedding.

For my program, I was going to outline what to expect (I.e. Groom’s Parade and Baci ceremony) but I feel like that’s not enough information to give.

Learning about different customs and traditions have been eye-opening and fun for me...any advice would be much appreciated!

I think adding a description and the importance of each facet of your ceremony to the program will be very helpful for the guests to understand exactly what is going on and why. Also, if you will be doing traditional foods, maybe a place card describing the food and any traditions linked to the food. It would be a great educational experience for everyone.

Maybe putting it on your wedding website so guests can learn in advance? Or even on a details card in the invite? The details card isn't as necessary, but would be a fun touch for guests to know in advance. If I saw it in an invite, I'd probably google it before so I understood it more.

I would add the detailed information for your ceremony on your wedding website and then short refreshers on the programs, just so you don't overload the programs with too much wording. I'm not familiar with what your cultural customs involve, but I did see where a bride and her fiancé were having a blended Christian/Jewish ceremony and they included a Jewish wedding prayer (or something like that, not an expert here) on the programs in Hebrew so the Christian guests would be able to follow along!

We included this little page in our program booklet. Mostly for the benefit of my family! None of my side is Ukrainian nor many of them Catholic. It was nice to have for people to learn about some different traditions!

It all depends on how big you want to make the program what we did for a friends is we had on the one side the program of events and the other side in smaller print a description of each one so others knew. It took some time to make up but that is what the internet is for. you could also do split page with description under or next to

I have all different food from all over the world and we have little chalk boards from amazon and writing the name of each dish on it. On the Web designer here i am adding a food page so people can also see what we are planing on having and read about it. but you also can post about the wedding there and describe each event and custom

If you have a wedding website add some facts about your culture to the page so visitors can familiarize themselves.

I’ve been to some Arab and Muslim weddings, and I’ve seen an extra card included with the invitation that not only explains the customs but tells people what to expect. I always found that helpful.
