Coworker hasn't cashed check

Shelby, on July 14, 2017 at 10:01 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

How do I approach a coworker to cash a check I wrote as a wedding gift? FH and I could not attend her wedding reception. It has been 5 weeks and she has not cashed the check! I don't want to be rude, but it's so inconsiderate to not cash it for this long. Everyone has mobile deposit these days! Another coworker gave her cash - neither of us have received a thank you note or acknowledgement of receipt. Sidenote: I saw a forum about cashing checks a couple weeks ago - this couple got legally married in 2016 and her name has been changed for over a year, so the name on the check should not be an issue.

Just ask, "Hey, I notice you haven't cashed the check I gave you at the wedding. Did you get it? I hope it wasn't lost or stolen" and then go from there.

Five weeks is not a long time.

    How is it inconsiderate?

    Not everyone has mobile deposit.

But T-Rex, as always, is spot on Smiley smile

My coworker did the same thing. It was annoying, but I get it. They were away for 2 weeks on their honeymoon and I'm sure they had a lot to do once they got back.

I think a year is when checks become void, so they typically have a year to cash them. Of course it is better to cash as soon as possible, but there are probably reasons why she hasn't (after all, she probably wants the money even more than you want her to cash the check lol). I wouldn't get too offended, and just politely ask if everything is going okay. Also, what T-rex said.

The policy at the bank I work for is this; any check written 6 months prior to the current date is considered "stale dated" and we are not able to cash it. I'm sure other financial institutions have different policies, though.

I agree with what T-Rex said. I also agree with you that 5 weeks is wayyyyyyyy too long and very inconsiderate. I would be irritated.

Checks are valid for 90 Days, and I would be irritated, but T-Rex is right, just ask.

On a side note, my sister had her graduation party about 6 weeks ago and is still receiving checks in the mail. They might still be getting cards in the mail and are just giving it some time to make sure they have them all before going to the bank. I visit my bank maybe once every 6 months because of mobile banking and mobile deposit.

I've been annoyed about the same thing. My fh's good friend got married 4 weeks ago and she hasn't cashed the check we wrote her. I finally had him check with her to make sure she got our card from the wedding and she said yes but just hasn't gotten around to depositing it, they haven't gone on their honeymoon yet but life gets busy so I get it.

While it's not a huge deal it is kinda annoying since I don't write many checks I'm thrown off when I look at my bank balance.

Years ago FH and I went to his friends wedding, and they didn't cash our check for six months. I was super annoyed. We were in our very early 20s, he wasn't making a ton of money, and we were living very paycheck to paycheck. Needless to say, we had a few days where I had to cross my fingers that check wouldn't clear. He refused to ask about it cause he thought it was rude to ask.

We haven't been in a financial position like that in a very long time, but to this day I prefer to give cash because I don't like outstanding checks. We pay FH's landlord for his guitar studio by money order because the guy will hold rent checks for months, and then cash them all at once. It's super annoying.

To echo 5 weeks is about the earliest I'd start to wonder and really I'd give it at least 8 weeks before I'd ask

Between the wedding and any kind of honeymoon they may still be going through things/taking trips to the bank (not everyone likes mobile deposit even if they have it)

I'm a little more concerned by the PP commenting there were times they've given someone a check and hoped it wouldn't clear certain days. That's a bad practice to get into. The money should be considered gone when the check is written and concerns about it not being cashed should be like concerns related to other gifts.

OP your wedding is still a while off but my only other concern would be if you planned to change banks/accounts after marriage. (Which is another reason they may not have cashed the check yet)

@augustlawbride, I'm not saying it was good we were in that financial position. We were 22 and flat broke. We're now 33 and not flat broke.

How long does it take to endorse a flippin' check and put it in The ATM? People who don't cash checks drive me crazy. If anyone gives me a check, it's in the bank before the ink is dry. Rude.

Ask her about it. Use the prompt @Trex gave.

I do find that super inconsiderate. We deposited the majority of our checks before we left for our honeymoon (the day after our wedding). The rest were deposited the day we got back. People are trying to balance their accounts. It's hard to do that when you have checks written that haven't been cashed yet. She should have deposited it ASAP.

If you have time to be on here then you can cash the check and/or write a thank you note

Okay I guess I'm UO but I think it's rude to not have cashed it yet. A week or two, sure- because of the honeymoon and all that. It's inconsiderate because you'll never know when it's gonna be taken out of your account. I would never wait that long.

We keep our money in our savings account unless we write a check because I hate keeping money in checking due to a problem with identity theft over a decade ago. So it would really annoy me to have a check uncashed that long.

You should have just given cash if it was going to be such a problem for you. Exactly the reason I don't give checks for anything other than my rent.

Thanks PPs! Especially @T-Rex - just didn't know what to say without feeling rude. I decided to give it through the weekend and then ask on Monday. Of course I log into my bank account today, and she has cashed it! Yay!

Completely agree with Mrs. B. If people cashing checks on their own schedule is going to bother you, don't give checks. Give cash or something from the registry.
