Covenant of Salt Ceremony

Mrs Danie, on February 11, 2010 at 12:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

Has anyone heard of or done this? Neither of us are very religious, but I did study Judiasm for a while and I feel a strong connection to this ceremony. I brought the idea up to FH but didnt get much response.

~The Covenant of Salt ceremony is used in many Biblical traditions. Salt is referred to in the Bible many times, since it was a very important and valued commodity (especially before refrigeration). There are many Biblical references to "the salt of the earth". The Covenant of Salt indicates a binding contract. In the Bible, when a contract was made, each party put a pinch of salt into the pocket of the other person. It was said that when each grain of salt could be sorted, identified, and returned to the rightful owner, the contract could be broken. Today, partners each take a vial of salt, and pour their salt into a container, joining the grains together for eternity. This tradition is popular with many religiously observant couples in place of the sand ceremony.

Its a Jewish tradition. I think it would be great for our themed wedding. In our Renaissance world my character comes from the Holy Land (Isreal) and this would have been a ceremony done at that time.

Go for it! It's something different, and if you feel a strong connection to it, you should do it.

That sounds like an interesting spin on the sand ceremony (even though it came first). I say go for it! We're doing an hourglass with almost the same effect - the glass will be turned every year on our anniversary to represent our lives becoming more entwined.
