Counterfeit dress!!!! :(

snaps, on February 9, 2011 at 6:47 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

I already have one wedding dress (a Maggie), but fell in love with a Sottero & Midgley gown. I bought one secondhand, off oncewed.com, and was soooooo excited to get it today. Before buying it, I had a close call and nearly got what I suspect was a fake. The tag in the photo showed it as being "Maggie Sottero" when this particular style gown is definitely a Sottero & Midgley.

Anyway, the dress arrived today. And it's fake. I only had to feel the material to know. The fabric is sub-par, the workmanship is not Sottero quality, the beading is all wrong, and the tag in the back (like the near miss knockoff) says "Maggie Sottero Couture" instead of "Sottero & Midgley Couture." I've already opened a claim dispute with Paypal and written to the seller. She spent $160 on postage to get the dress here (from Canada) -- I'm HOPING I don't have to pay the return shipping! Sending it back only allows her to find someone else to rip off.

I am so, so, so disappointed. Smiley sad

That sounds horrible! I'm very very sorry that happened, and my best wishes to what happens in the future for you and everyone else who finds that fake.

Awe I'm sorry that you were ripped off. It's such a shame because there are reputable sellers and when you are a victim of fraud it's hard to trust people.

I know - this is actually the only time I've had a poor experience with buying on the internet. I guess I should count myself lucky that I've lasted so long, but seriously?...my wedding dress? Couldn't it have been ANYTHING else to be ripped off on??

Oooo, that's crappy. I had a similar convo with another bride here who was questioning the same thing and one thing we found is that all Sottero/Midgley dresses or even just Sottero ones come with a certificate of authenticity, just like a fine collectible Smiley smile Next time, ask to see that FIRST. Hang in there and good luck!

It was me you were speaking to! I bought one of the ones you suggested (not trying to sound like I'm placing blame - your detective work was very kind) off oncewed.com. The woman had the photo of the certificate, and the correct label, but they were obviously just photos stolen from someone else. They certainly weren't in the box I opened today!

I thought so but couldn't find it in my lists! That really stinks! It sounds like you have a clear case of not receiving what you paid for though, esp if you kept the emails of the pictures with the certificate and tags. Good luck!

Boo shady sellers! I got ripped off from a seller on oncewed too! She advertised the dress as being in like-new condition, but when I got it, it had stains and a hole(!) in it. When I opened a dispute with Paypal, I requested to be reimbursed for the amount I paid for shipping as well, and did offer to return the dress -so it was obvious I wasn't just trying to get a dress for free. They sided with me.

I'd look into your return shipping options - $160 is insane.

Just an FYI- Sottero and Midgely is made by Maggie. That could explain the tag. But, sub par is sub par.

Crappy, so that happened. And yes, they come with a certificate of Authenticity. I got one with mine.

That sucks! One of the bigger issues is that you will be dealing with a Canadian retailer- who is not subject to US laws- so selling a fake may be legal.

Hopefully the seller will work with you- or make sure an obliterate her in reviews! Have you contacted the website you purchased through? They may have some more recourse than you do...

A Paypal claim should take care of it. They tend to favor the buyer in pretty much all situations.

I recently bought what was supposed to be an authentic Pronovias Mildred wedding dress from Anne Bridal (annebridals.com) for my daughter. That was my worst mistake. Having tried the actual dress on in a bridal boutique prior to buying from them, it was obvious the dress received was a fake. The tulle was cheap, design details weren’t the same, and the dress tag I saw on actual Pronovias dresses (after I purchased the dress), was subtly different. They post stock photos, as well as their own photos of the dress on a mannequin, but looking back the quality was poor and details weren’t as clear until it was in hand. They also sell their dresses on preownedweddingdresses.com and I’ve asked them to look into this, as well as reporting them to the designer’s counterfeit info area. I’ve learned a big lesson about shopping online. There was no real address, only a PO Box (PO box 20896), no phone number, and a free and general email address domain (**********@*****.***). They refunded my money, but I waited to get my money back before I blasted them about their fraudulence. An actual address (31 Flower Avenue, Floral City, NY, 11001) was posted on another website, ironically one that is meant to minimize scammers, but I noticed all the info was erased a couple of days ago. My guess is they could smell a complaint coming. They denied selling counterfeits, of course, and used the excuse that it was an older model dress, but I know what was tried on and I know what I received-two completely different products. No decent contact info, low price and sometimeish photos, I should have known. STAY AWAY!
