I've been to a few weddings where the cocktail hour had no food and everyone stood around for an hour starving. That will NOT occur at my cocktail hour! My venue has good hot and cold appetizer options but are expensive and not something I want to spend our money on. Has anyone ever heard of, done, or considered purchasing large fruit platters and cheese/cracker trays for their cocktail hour? We obviously would arrange them nicely on the tables at the venue to look nice during the cocktail hour but I think this would be a great option to have a simple, nice appetizer for guests and save money. What do you ladies think?

We had fruit, cheese and crackers and punch. It was included in our cocktail hour by the hotel.

If your venue is ok with it, then go for it. Just make sure to get enough for everyone to have at least a few pieces of each app. People tend to fill their places up at cocktail hour.

It depends in part on how big your reception is. Fruit and cheese trays can very quickly get icky if there is no one attending them, making sure that nothing gets dropped onto them and that they get refilled if necessary. For a short cocktail hour for a few people they can work. But for a longer one, or one with more people, I'd at least hire an attendant.

We want to do this for our cocktail party-style reception (no plated dinner after). Does anyone have an estimate of cost for ~100 people?
