Cornhole and other yard games?

Bo Miller, on July 17, 2020 at 8:07 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 35

So I am getting married in November of 2021 and my FW and I were discussing the idea of having cornhole set up and some giant Jenga or something like that for during the cocktail hour and for the dancing portion of the reception. I don't have much of a family so my side of the guest list is like 4 people, so it will be mainly her side. I am worried that it would come off as just a family reunion and not our wedding? Any thoughts?

Not at all! I'm seeing more games at weddings, especially daytime and early afternoons. It's a great option for folks who want to take a break from dancing or just to have another form of entertainment that you all can use again! We also got a giant connect 4 🙂

That what I was thinking her family aren't big dancers, so I wanted to make sure I gave them options of things to do besides sit there watch. Thank you!

Oh absolutely! Not sure if you're having any teen family/kids at your wedding but it's also great for them! Really any age. I'm sure folks will enjoy!

We are also getting married in November 2021 and we are doing yard games. My fiancé insisted on it and our DJ/photographer offered a package that includes some games such as cornhole, giant tic tac toe, giant jenga, giant connect 4 and a bowling game. Our venue has an outdoor area for cocktail hour so that is where we are setting the games up. I don’t think it’ll be too “reunion-ey” or picnicky because a lot of people have been doing these now. So I say go for it!

Lawn games are definitely a major wedding trend. I think it also helps people to socialize a lot more easily and gives them something to do during cocktail hour. I’m having multiple cornhole sets and a few outdoor dart boards

I think it depends on the formality of the wedding. Yard games would seem extremely our of place for a formal wedding, but would make sense if you having a non formal wedding. The only concern I would have is depending on where you are having your wedding the weather might not be ideal for yard games.

Oh yes lots of kids and a few teens! I was planning on setting up a little game table for them and the big games for the adults, but that is a good point they would more than likely want to play the bigger games!

I definitely think lawn games are a great idea! If I were a guest at a wedding that had them, I would appreciate it, since I'm not much of a dancer and it would give me something to do. My venue provides cornhole, and my fiance and I are thinking about providing a few other games too. I think it'll still feel like a wedding with the lawn games!

We haven't quite nailed down a venue yet because I am indecisive and picky HAHA! But all of the ones that are on the list have outdoor areas that we are planning on doing the cocktail hour at, so that is where the games came into the picture. I definitely think we are going to go for it. We are looking at buying them because they would be a good investment for future family functions!

That's what I was thinking is that it would help them to socialize and not just stand in their own little groups and not mingle. After going to many of family functions with my FW I have learned that if you want her family to mingle you have to have drinks and an activity HAHA!

Ours is more of a county rustic feel that will be at a farm with the reception in a barn with patio area for the cocktail hour, so I don't think that the yard games would be too out of place.

That was my thought my FW isn't a dancer at all and her family isn't really either (even though I am), so I thought offering the dance floor and the games would be a good mix of the both of us!

Yes true!!! And even if you maybe only want to buy one or two games, most of the time family members or friends will have some of them because they’re so popular now.

They are, I just didn't want that kind of feel to take away from the fact that I am marrying my best friend!

We are in Florida and the weather is usually mild around the time we are planning, a long sleeve shirt is usually more than enough. Which is why we picked our date since I wanted an outdoor wedding and my FW hates being hot lol

I think that’s a perfect idea , we are doing the same. I don’t think it’ll come off as a family reunion I’ve seen it more common in wedding to have these sorts or games for the cocktail hour
