Contract changes

K W, on July 15, 2023 at 5:30 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6
We booked our reception venue (we’re eloping and just having a reception) and we were told we were able to have a DJ, so we booked a DJ. We just got an email saying contrary to our contract we are no longer able to have a DJ. Are they able to do this? I emailed them immediately after they emailed me asking if there was any compensation for already having booked the DJ, and they did not respond. That was a week ago, so I emailed them today asking to cancel the entire contract with a full refund due to this major change in it. I feel that’s within our rights? Does anyone have any information on this?

Is it in your contract that you can have a DJ at the reception venue?

The contract did not mention “live music” at all. However, I do have the emails of them stating we could have one and he even stated “I know we discussed the possibility but we can not longer accommodate live music if any form…” although he told us in person where the DJ could set up.

The comment “we discussed the possibility” makes it sound as though they were thinking about it for you, but nothing had ever been confirmed. I hate to think the worst, but it almost sounds as though they know they are doing something wrong, and are trying to word it in a way that doesn’t make them look guilty. If you have other emails though, that blatantly state you could have a DJ, then I think you definitely have a leg to stand on when it comes to demanding a refund. A DJ is a huge part of a wedding reception, and all reception venues know this.

That’s exactly how I feel! He stated in person that we could have a DJ because we asked specifically where they could be placed at. Here’s the email/message after we asked if there was space Contract changes 1

The last post sounds like the venue rep was willing to discuss the requirements if you wanted to include additional space for a DJ. If you responded that you approve doing what is needed, they should proceed on that agreement. I would hope that even in the case of a misunderstanding (on either side) that they could work out a way to keep the DJ as part of the reception.

"Contrary to the contract" makes it sound like even they admitted to allowing a dj and are now renege on the agreed upon contract.

I would send them another email asking how they plan on fixing this for you. Otherwise you may need legal help.
