Commitment Ceremony for dying Grandma

FutureMrsPurdy, on April 6, 2015 at 9:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 20

A week ago I posted about FH's grandma dying. His Grandma raised him and along with his grandfather, legally adopted him and his sister when they were little. FH has a very special relationship with her. She is located in Wisconsin and we live in upstate New York, so over the weekend we drove out there to say goodbye. We surprised her and had our relationship blessed with a commitment ceremony. It was like a mini-wedding. Everyone kinda pitched in. One family member had silk flowers put together, a cake was made. It was awesome. With about 15 family members, crowded into Grandma's room we had our ceremony. Nearly everyone cried and Grandma said it was the best wedding she had ever been to. I have no regrets and am so happy we did this. My favorite part: when the pastor asked us to join hands, grandma gave us her hand to hold. We said our vows holding her hand. I look forward to my wedding on July 4th, but our "wedding" on April 4th will always be special to us.

Sweetest thing! I lost my grandmother 3 weeks before our wedding, it was so quick that we did not get a chance to do this.

You will always remember this moment, possibly more than your 7/4 :-)

What a beautiful and everlasting sentiment, and a wonderful way to remember her. I am so very sorry for what you and FH must be going through with having to say goodbye to her, but I can't imagine a better way to do it.

I'm glad you were able to do that for her (and for your FH as well, I'm sure). Now you'll have two special dates together.

I did a hand-fasting ceremony for a couple in a similar situation. The FOG was not expected to live until their official wedding date. I had him tie the cords around the B&G's hands.

What a wonderful thing to do! I can only imagine how much it meant to her and it will give your FH a special memory to hold on the day of the actual wedding. Congratulations!

Thank you for the sweet posts. I'm so glad we did this. We found out a couple of hours ago, Grandma has passed away. She talked about our "wedding" constantly in the last couple of days and I know it made her very happy. I am consoled by this.

What a blessing you got to do this for her. Your story is very similar to mine with the ICU wedding for my dying father. It was our legal one, but we plan to celebrate the happy one. Most of us, including the minister, were crying through the first one. It meant the world to dad, and he passed 4.5 days later. I treasure those memories.

@Susan M how much time between both ceremonies? We have a difference of three months. I hope having that space of time help with the healing.
