Comfort or cost saving?? (heels and alterations)

My dress is ordered and I'm trying to decide what to do when it comes to shoes and alterations. I already ordered petite. The hollow to hem is 55. Mine is like 51 1/2 (if I measured correctly). In an ideal scenario, I get to pretty much be barefoot for my wedding because I'm a bit clumsy and never wear heels. My alterations wouldn't be cheap though because of the floral appliques on the bottom of my dress. Our budget is small and we are trying to save anywhere we can. Is it better to buy heels and get use to them so I can avoid the cost of alternations OR is it better to pay the extra money to be able to wear shoes I know I'll be comfortable in? Did you have a similar experience? What did you choose? Any regrets? The dress pictured is a regular 4, I ordered a 2P so length is not accurate, but you can kinda see the detail that will bring up the cost of hemming. (Please excuse my face)cfb_1376813.jpg

Go for the alterations! I have learned from too many nights out that I cannot wear anything higher than 3 inches without hating my life. Too many times I tried wearing beautiful 4 inch heels only to spend the night sitting down watching my friends dance because my feet hurt too much. Don't let that be you at your wedding!

Kinda sucks but I would get it hemmed. Im super lucky im tall enough (5’6) + 2inches height on my sneakers that I got to skip the $350 cost to hem my dress. In ur case if ur not used to heels a 4-5inch heel is kind of a lot. I would hem it.

I'm having a similar issue as you! Not sure how high my heel has to be but I prefer flats or comfortable shoes I'd wear again but don't want to spend too much on alterations. Have you looked for platform shoes of sandals or sneakers?

I'm not sure how or if that would work with my dress. I can look into it though

I kinda have. Still searching. I might get a couple different types to see how I manage in them.

I just recently started looking up platform sandals. Maybe try those since they're flat but basically have a wedge.

I would buy a pair of shoes that are the right height and see how you do walking in them. Wear them for errands, etc. If you can manage then buy bridal shoes with the same size heel. If not pay to get it hemmed. No sense in not trying a $30 solution to save hundreds. I'm 5'1" but wear heels daily. Still, I'm opting for 3" and a hem.

I’d hem them! You don’t want to be uncomfortable. And if your not used to walking in heels you will probably look not as graceful as you want

I’ll be honest I opted out of altering since it was going to cost so much so I found some wedges. But I also have an indoor venue so it’ll be okay for me to take my shoes off once it comes time to dance!

You're going to be so tired with all that's going on that day; better to know you'll be comfortable in your shoes all day.

I was about to say the same, maybe a wedge or a thicker chunky heel with a strap.

I don’t remember to be honest it was ordered in September. I want to say it was 40 something since she measured it from the plunge neckline not the hollow. But when I tried it on it JUST dusted the floor so it was perfect.

I think getting it altered would make the dress look longer. Us short people problems lol. I vote for flats all day. Pretty dress

Your dress is beautiful it's only right that you finish it off with a pair of sexy heels. Congratulations!

Thanks for the input everyone! This was helpful. I think I'm going to try to find some stacked platform type shoes instead of regular high heels to try out. If I have no luck, I'll definitely get it altered because I don't want to be miserable (or falling over!) on my wedding day. I'll just have to fit it in my budget somehow.

Get shoes you love and are comfortable and that you can wear all night and have the dress altered to suit them. If you were talking about an inch or two, I would say see if you can get the perfect height heels before you have the dress altered, but 3 1/2+ inch heels is a bit much for a person who is clumsy in heels and would prefer flats. If it was a shorter heel (like 2") I'd say you could make it work.

Since the appliques don't go all the way around your dress as a trim on the hemline, I don't think the alterations would be overly expensive. It's likely only a few of them that will need to be moved, as you can have the dress taken up in the front and stay a similar length in the back since the dress has a train. You are going to need some alterations regardless (you'll want a bustle for the train), so ask the seamstress what the cost would be to have the dress hemmed slightly.

Whatever you do, find shoes you love and that are comfortable before making any alterations or final decisions.
