Columbus day weekend wedding; yes or no?

Jackie, on October 24, 2018 at 5:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

Hi all! I'm so excited to be here, this is my first post!!! I just got engaged on Friday and I 'm hoping to not go crazy planning this early, but I just had one question I wanted to get out of my mind. I'm interested in a possible wedding date of the weekend starting October, 9, 2020. I was originally going to go for a Friday or Saturday wedding, but that following Monday is Columbus Day and Sunday weddings are cheaper... what are the pros and cons of having my wedding on the Sunday before Columbus day, has anyone here ever done that, and what do you guys think? (I'm pretty dead-set on somewhere between late September and early October of 2020). TIA!!

Columbus day isn't a day that many people have off, I'm a teacher and I've never had that day off so I don't think it really makes that Sunday any different than any other Sunday. That said, a lot of people have beautiful Sunday weddings and they are just fine! Just be aware of the time you set stuff, as many people do plan to leave earlier and may not drink as much.

Hi! So my wedding was this past Sunday before Columbus Day. My husband and I had that Monday off and 80% of our guests did as well; we knew family would fly out with no issues and the guests that had to fly in took off Monday rather than that Friday they would have had to take off for a Saturday wedding (if that makes sense). If anyone had issues, no one said anything to us! Most of our out of town guests made a mini vacation of it as we gave plenty of time and announcements saying it was a Sunday wedding.

I've never heard of anyone getting Columbus Day off, so I'd treat it like any other Sunday wedding. All the Sunday weddings I've been to started earlier, ended earlier, and had less drinking/partying.

I think this is a know your crowd thing. Almost no one in our family/friends group is off on Columbus Day so it would be just like any other Sunday for us. That might not be true for you though.

I know Columbus Day can be a big weekend for festivals and small trips for families so be mindful that some people may be on vacation. Also at my previous job I did not have the day off. I’d be mindful and maybe have an early wedding maybe starting around 2 instead of the normal 4-6.

I just went to a Columbus Day weekend wedding this year (on the Friday). The only advice I can offer is to not forget about guests’ travel budgets, if you have people coming in from out of town. Airfare tends to skyrocket for holiday weekends. I spent SO MUCH to get to this wedding that I probably would not have gone....if it had been anyone but my brother getting married! I mean I’d pay every cent I had to go to his wedding, but a more distant relative or not super close friend...cost of attendance would be a deciding factor for me. (Sidenote, we SAVED $300 by flying back in the middle of the day on Sunday, instead of staying til Monday/ the actual holiday 😱)

We got married on the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend. My husband is a teacher so he had that Monday off. Most of our guests came from out of town and stayed thru Monday.

We got married this past Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 6). Both my husband and I had that day off because of our job fields, but only a handful of our guests did not so they went back home the Sunday after. Those who did have off made a mini vacation out of it since we live just outside Washington, D.C.

We're getting married the Saturday before Columbus Day in 2020. We've had one vendor mention "holiday pricing" for that weekend, but other than that, it's been treated like a normal weekend.

Most of our family doesn't have it off, but since we're doing that Saturday, I didn't think much of it. For those that are coming from out of town, a few might have that day off, so it'll be a nice bonus that they have some extra time.

As others said, I'd treat it like any other Sunday, though! If we didn't already have our hearts set on our date, we'd totally consider a Sunday brunch wedding in particular.

    Congratulations, and good luck!

I’ve never had off work or school for Columbus Day, so It would be just a normal Sunday for me.

Around here our city doesn’t celebrate it anymore and we never had school off. Most jobs also don’t count it as one of the holidays being off so it being that Sunday would be no different than any other Sunday

My wedding is the Saturday before Columbus Day next year, but that’s not why we chose it. It just happened to be an Oct Sat that the venue had available and that worked with our schedule.

The only people I know who get Columbus Day off are government employees. My mom happens to be one, so it works out well for her, but not many of our other guests do.

All of that to say...even though it’s technically a holiday weekend, I’d treat that Sunday just like any other. Start your ceremony earlier so the reception ends earlier and in-town guests can get to bed for work the next morning.
