Cocktail style reception

Alexandra, on August 13, 2020 at 8:38 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12

Hello fellow brides! My fiance and I want to have a cocktail style reception following our ceremony. What are your thoughts and advice on this? Have you been to a cocktail style wedding reception before? Do's and dont's? What did you like and did not like?

I also need some guidance on how to execute the seating arrangements.

Thank you!

Cocktail receptions can be great if done right. My best advice is to make sure that it’s at a non meal time and that there’s still sufficient seating for everyone. Also make sure that the only seats/tables available aren’t high tops.

I have never been to one but the pp has a point that if you are going to serve just some light bites then best in between meals before dinner. Or I would serve heavy passed appetizers or party trays where people coming leave full. Smiley smile

If they are substantial food (sliders, carving stations, dim sum, etc) rathen tea sandwiches and fruit platters, your guests will not go hungry and you can absolutely serve them during a meal time. If done correctly, you get more food that is filling at a cocktail reception than a plateddinner. But they are not cheaper because there is more food and they are labor intensive. Just call it dinner on your invites because that is what is.

Seating arrangements are not necessary but every guest requires a table and chair. Set up the tables like you're having a plated dinner but skip the place settings and seating chart.
Have a variety of options for all dietary restrictions that are clearly labeled and enough waitstaff so food does not run out. Make sure that your stations are spread out enough to avoid congestion.
You can still do the cake cutting, dancing, etc with a relaxed party vibe from the start.

It sounds like you want an elegant cocktail reception? If so, I’d make sure you have 3-4 heavy passed hors douvres followed by simple apps like cheese and cracker station, fresh fruits, crudités.
Make sure you have a combination of both high tops, low tops and actual rounds and as pp notated enough seating for all.

I’ve hosted many parties like this and always go over very well!

For a heavy appetizer reception like you're wanting, you need a bare minimum of 20 pieces per person to be the equivalent of dinner. That can be as little as 4 varieties or as many as you wish, not counting platters of fruit or meat and cheese.

If you want a cocktail hour reception, then I would make it at non-meal time otherwise guests will expect a full meal. I would also make sure there is still enough seating for each person.

I would also make sure you have a substantial variety of food and that they're all on the heavier side
