Cocktail Reception- Assigned Tables?

Andrea, on September 19, 2019 at 10:12 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Hi everyone!

Me and my fiance have opted out of a traditional reception and are having our ceremony/dessert +hors d'oeuvres reception after dinner time in the night. My question is, should we still assign tables? I know some may suggest cocktail tables, sofas etc but those aren't options at our venue since it's at a community center. They have regular round+ rectangle tables and chairs. What do you think, friends?

I wouldn't bother assigning tables since it's highly unlikely that everyone will be seated all at once.

Unless everyone is expected to be seated at some point, I wouldn't assign tables.

I'd just make sure there was enough seating for people to sit and eat (I hate standing while I eat). People also may need a break from dancing!

I went to a wedding with no seating chart where they only served desserts and no one knew where to sit so everyone ended up standing. Two people or three would sit at a table separate from eachother so my friends and I could find a table to fit all of us (cuz we would have taken up one table).

It's not necessary, but I would reccomend it to avoid that issue

    Hey Katie,

Wow, that must have been truly uncomfortable. Sorry you had that experience! Sigh... yeah like for sure we'd have enough tables and chairs, that'd be no problem... I know the seating chart seems a bit formal for my type of wedding but.... yeah!! LMAO thank you so much for your input. Much appreciatedSmiley heart

My FH and I are doing the same thing! We're not going to have assigned tables. We have cocktail tables and a sofa for people to sit on so we don't have to rent more things.

    Hey Lindsay,

That's so cool! Is your cocktail reception going to be during the day or at night like mine? And I wish our venue had cocktail tables and sofas but unfortunately they don't so we'll have to stick with the round tables, thank you so much!!

We are having a cocktail party reception as well and are not assigning tables. We are making sure there will be enough seats for everyone at once (mostly because they will also be used for the ceremony) but did not rent enough tables for everyone all at once. For reference we will have a total of 6 tables with chairs and 4 cocktail tables for 46 people.

We are having a similar reception. We will not be doing table assignments. There will be enough seats for everyone, but I don’t feel the need to tell adults where to sit. We want things to be casual, and I don’t think a seating chart would vibe with that. Our guest list is somewhat small, so I don’t expect any issues as far as people having seating issues.

I don't think so, if people will just be mingling and it will be more like a cocktail hour for the entire wedding.

Hey! It's going to be in the evening around dinner time and with having a lot of kids there it makes it a little more casual but intimate. Round tables are always great for families and grandparents who might not be able to stand for a while! I'm sure it will be beautiful!
