Does your caterer offer appetizers? You could go with cheese and crackers or some fruit and veggie trays.

A lot of venues require a licensed caterer for liability reasons. I would check on that first.

I would avoid self-catering for your own event, it's a lot of work.

Having said all of that, I'd personally prefer something like a veggie tray and dip (kept at food safe temps of course).
