CNWR: After counter offer and don't hear back.. donezo?

Completely Not Wedding Related...

I received a job offer from a company last Friday (a week ago). I counter offered on Monday. We talked on Tuesday and they said they would have to check with some higher ups. I haven't heard anything. Do you think they are "still checking" or have I lost the job and they are offering it to someone else at this point?

After offering you the job I doubt they would just leave you hanging. I'm sure you'll hear from them again, but be prepared that they may say their original offer is the best they can do.

I am not sure as i do not work in HR, but i would think that if they weren't willing to come back with another offer for you that you would have heard back fairly soon( unless someone was out of the office/ on vacation). i suppose they could have presented it to someone else, and didn't want to tell you know till they got an answer from the other candidate? but i am not sure if thats how things work in hiring processes.

maybe some one else would have more incite.

I don't think they would not tell you something either way. This happened with a job I was offered about 3 years ago. The VP that had to approve the counter was out of the office. It also gave me more time to compare and think about it all. It was a move across country. In the end I didn't accept. So thank this additional time to make sure its what you want. Also, with it being the holiday season a lot of people are taking time off so it may take longer.

That's what I was thinking, @Jessi. At least tell me, sorry, can't meet your counter offer.

@Brigit, not sure if they would do that either, but it definitely crossed my mind! People are sneaky!

The extra time as definitely been helpful @AG2005. Good point on needing the VP's approval..

WithHitch11/07- i think it could potentially get sticky if they did that but i am not sure. Hopefully you hear from them and some one was just on vacation. you could always check back in with them next week if you dont hear.

I really don't think they would leave you hanging and offer the job to someone else. That seems like bad business practices. I think they'll either come back to the table with another offer or say the original is the best they can do. I would follow up on Monday if you haven't heard back.

Was it a big difference in their offer and your counter?

I wouldn't worry yet. depending o their budget, they might have to rework their numbers and really ensure they can afford to meet your counter, or what they could reasonably offer.
