Closing a Keyhole Back?

Shannon, on July 5, 2019 at 1:56 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

Hello! I am more modest, but the dress I fell in love with has a very open keyhole back (pic below). Has anyone closed up a keyhole back? Have any ideas on how to close it up without it ruining or clashing with the dress?

Would love to hear your thoughts!

Bonus points if you have pictures of any keyhole closing alterations! Thank you!! Smiley smile

That's a very open back! Sometimes the seamstress can find matching fabric to bottom half and sew in a panel but I'm not sure how you'd cover so much space without more buttons or zippers. Because the lace is such an unusual pattern it'd be hard to match too. I guess it'd also depend on how modest you want to be as well, a tulle/sheer panel wouldn't look too bad.
There's also capulets and capes to cover the upper areas, the silloette would probably look really cute with an elbow length capulet or cape pinned at the shoulders with a tiny broach.

    Hi Shannon Smiley smile

Have you purchased the dress yet? If so, I would recommend you take it to a seamstress and talk through options on how to close the back. It’s is quite a large space, however, they may be able to insert a piece of fabric. If you haven't bought it yet, I would share this photo with a seamstress and speak with him/her.

It’s amazing the work seamstresses can do! I would always defer to their professional opinion in situations like this Smiley smile

Hi Susan! I'm so sorry to hear that you're in the same issue! I actually ended up returning that dress and going with another one that didn't have a keyhole back.

A local seamstress at the time recommended taking some tulle (either your skin color or white) and having it sewn into the keyhole portion to fill it in a little bit.

    I hope this helps!
