Cleaning your ring - how & how often?

I got engaged on the 5th (Whee! - I'll attach a pic just because.) and I'm trying to think of a good way to keep my ring looking good. I wear it 24/7 except for lotioning, sports, and really messy cooking, so it's going to get pretty gross.

I was thinking of buying an ultrasonic cleaner and using that every week or so. Anyone else do this? I have one at work (I work in a lab) and we use ours sometimes for cleaning our eyeglasses. It works REALLY well. Link to the one I'm looking at: http://www.amazon.com/CD-2800-Ultrasonic-Jewelry-Eyeglass-Cleaner/dp/B001DKDAVW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=jewelry&qid=1279201025&sr=8-1

So, how often do you clean your ring? What do you use?

Heat a mug with a bit of water in it in the microwave, put some dish soap and some windex in, stir, drop in the ring and let it sit until the water cools..then use an old toothbrush and gently clean it.. rinse it off and ta-da..beautimous! I do that like every other week and it works awesome IMO.

I never take my ring off... literally, never! I have jewelry cleaner from Target. You soak it for about 30 sec, then brush with the little brush included. I do it about once a month, or when I notice its dirty.

I guess I am anal. I clean mine everyday. I use a tarnish remover solution once a week and then I soak it in a solution from sunshine products every day while I am in the shower. Then I scrub the diamonds with a little brush. It is very sparkly and I have received numerous comments on people thinking it is brand new because of how shiny I keep it. My jeweler did tell me that you should clean it everyday to keep it at it's best but that you could even just soak it in windex and then brush it with a toothbrush. Now again, this is for diamonds, I am not sure if that is the case with sapphires.

I wouldn't buy this model because over the years I have bought this one twice and the part on the hinge area always breaks off and I haven't even had it too long. The first time I thought "okay, I'll try this one more time and buy it again" but after the second time I will no longer buy this model again.

I too worked in jewelry...Windex or diluted dish soap and a soft bristled toothbrush work best. You can actually heat either the Windex or the dish soap in the microwave for 30-45 seconds and then hit it with the toothbrush. If you want to spend the money to get an ultrasonic, it will probably work, but I found that even the industrial strength ones that we had at work would equal the shine of just using Windex.

A soft toothbrush and liquid dish soap is the best...you can, and should, take it to any jewelry store for cleaning and an inspection at least every six months...free and you don't have to have purchased there!

Seems like every time I go to the mall and look in at the jewelry story they offer to clean my e ring and wedding band for free. Either they are really dirty or they are just really nice. We did not buy them there, so I just thought they did it for free at every mall. I also have a sonic machine at home.

Haha MOM N. "Either they are really dirty or they are just really nice."

I'm not too good about cleaning mine either. I figure it gets cleaned when I do the dishes.

Well i get mine cleaned & checked professional everytime i pass by the jewelry store i bought it from, but when I'm home i use:

a cup of warm/hot water with liquid dish detergent and i swirl my ring in there... then i take it out and clean it with this ecotool eyeshadow brush and get it nice and bubbly =) it makes it shiny! i clean it like 2-3/ week =)

here's how it looks like... the eye shadow brush i use...

my jeweller said not to use a toothbrush b/c it can leave scratches on your ring/ diamond... be gentle =)

I clean my ring about once a week at home, and then bring it in to be professionally cleaned at the jeweler we purchased it from a few times a year! The professional cleaning will always be better, and they can also check your ring for any damage or loose stones at the same time!

Clean it in the dishwasher. It comes out sparkling. Here's a video:
