Cigar Bar ?

Future Mrs.P, on April 13, 2016 at 4:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33

My FH loves to smoke international cigars . So I wanted to surprise him with a cigar bar at the wedding . I just started looking into this and I'm unaware of the cost and etc involved. DIY or hire a professional to roll on-site ?Has anyone had one ? If so ,how was the experience ?

Disclaimer: Before anyone ask , yes I asked my venue it's allowed as long as it's near the outdoor patio .

I don't know prices and I'm sure it ranges depending on where you are but I will say, I was a MOH in a wedding that had one and it was AWESOME! Problem was, it was outside and their wedding was inside and NO ONE danced because everyone was so interested in the cigars because they were going rolling night. And I know it wasn't because of a crappy DJ. He is awesome, we have seen him at wedding and actually hired him lol. My suggestion would be to only have it during cocktail hour maybe even throughout dinner and then cut it off when the party gets started.

I've seen this done very successfully when a professional was hired, and horribly unsuccessfully when one wasn't.

I'm not a cigar fan so I didn't participate but those that did enjoyed it.

I don't know much, but don't cigars take a long time to smoke? Like it's not a quick cigarette. Are you willing to lose your FH and guests to the outdoor smoking area for good portions of your wedding?

This is something I wish we would have thought of for ours...FH and myself are BIG cigar fans, as are many of our guests. (We smoked at the bar later that night, a friend gifted us a couple of nice cigars)

I love the idea, and if its in your budget, I'd go for it!!!

I didn't even think about the time it takes to smoke one. But I've never seen FH smoke a whole one in one sitting. He normally smoke about 1/4 way down and put it out. I don't know if it's because I make him go outside and smoke it in all weather conditions . Or he wants to save some for later, he does spend a good penny on one .

This isn't included in our wedding budget since I want it to be a surprise . I'm paying for it out of my own personal funds.

I've seen this done, and everybody who likes cigars really enjoyed it. FH went out to get one and wasn't gone that long.

I think having someone there rolling cigars would be really cool. If you're FH really likes cigars, I think he'd appreciate that. Plus it'd be more convenient than trying to track down a variety of cigars yourself.

Our venue doesn't allow this, but it's a great idea. FH really wanted it.

I think it's a great idea for people who like them. I've seen my FH smoke a few over the years and they seem to take a really long time to finish. I would just worry people will spend the whole time outside and not inside with you! I'm sure you'd go out and watch/join at some point, but I would hate for it to take the focus off you guys for the wedding. That being said, still a cool idea.

If you can't do it, could you just purchase some high quality cigars for the morning of and getting ready? That might make for some cool pictures and still allow him to enjoy it without taking away from the evening festivities.

@Soon2BMrsB : That's a great idea ! I can even see if he wants to do some GM pictures at his favorite cigar bar in town.

It's expensive. I'd go for a hand picked gift box for him, from an exotic cigar store.

No advice on DIY vs pro. But I would recommend making sure that this is far enough away and not right outside the door. As a non-smoker I would hate to be breathing in secondhand smoke all night. I would probably leave early if that was the case.

FH is a big cigar guy. I asked him if he wanted to do this; he said no, because they'd have to be outside, and he wanted to be inside. Also...smoke on attire, etc. I agree with Celia... find some really nice stogies from a cigar store and give it to him as a gift. He IS giving a couple of really good cigars to his GMs to share together before the wedding as gifts and perhaps really great lighters (cigar lighter with punch, etc)

I love the smell of cigars. Can you do it just for the groomsmen while they are getting ready? Or during the rehearsal dinner? That way it won't take away from the reception.

At the last wedding my parents attended, they were seated next to one of the two exterior doors, where smokers went in and out all evening. They also had some type of wood fire thing burning, in a big, metal cone (not a fire pit).

My Mom is an asthmatic. She had her inhaler on the table and used it as often as she possibly could, before they had to leave early. She jokes that she's like a bloodhound - she can smell smoke on a person 50 feet away. My Dad said you could smell the fire cone inside as well (the venue had a lot of windows - all closed).

Mom had actually called the venue, to see if they had any wood burning fireplaces and they assured her they were both gas, so she'd be safe. Unfortunately ...

Former smoker- I had to quit because I developed asthma. I used to love cigars, but the smoke sets off an asthma attack now. Make sure you set it up someplace around the corner and downwind of other guests.

And I am chiming in with the pp's about cigar smoking guests being outside and participating in nothing but the cigar bar all night. There will be far fewer dancers.

It sounds like a fun idea, but as someone who hates the smell of cigar smoke I'd worry about the smell of smoke on people's clothes being a turn-off for non-smokers and losing too many people to the outside area. That part is probably more dependent on how many guests you host.

We looked at a venue with a fire pit and the owner mentioned couples often have cigar bars by the pit. that was a HUGE selling point for FH. we ended up choosing a different venue. I think its a nice idea, especially for guests who dont dance or who like cigars. I would not DIY it unless you really know your cigars.

I wanted to do this too but then we went to a wedding with a cigar bar- and there was NO ONE ON THE DANCE FLOOR!! Everyone was outside on the adjacent patio, smoking cigars. It made me completely re-think the cigar bar idea! So, keep that in mind.

Been to a couple charity events that had an on site cigar roller SUPER FUN! The guys loved it. You can even get little cigar bags/sleeves with your wedding date for those who want to take theirs home
