Church dilemma

Amanda, on January 9, 2017 at 6:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 27

Over the summer we started looking for a church for the ceremony. The first church we looked at is the church that FH's family belongs to. His mother is fairly active in the church. We went to check it out and it is honestly unattractive. The pews are orange and there's not much decor. They also don't have air conditioning and it was really hot in there.

Then we looked at a local church that we really liked. It's a big, pretty church and the members seemed really laid back. They also have air conditioning. The church put us in the book that day and gave us a form to fill out. The secretary said to take our time because she put us in the book. Well when my FH dropped off the form a couple months later the secretary said there was an incident a year ago and it would be an extra 200 dollars for someone to unlock the door and turn the lights on. I think that's kind of ridiculous and decided not to book that church. Continued in comments...

Now we are debating between booking his mom's "ugly" church, sucking it up and paying for the church we like, or finding a completely new church. Booking FMILS church would save money and probably be easier. However it just doesn't have the look I imagined. I would love opinions! Thanks in advance.

Not sure where you are located but I feel like you definitely need air conditioning for an August wedding

We are located in central NY and it gets very hot in the summer so air conditioning is critical.

How does your FH feel about it?

Also, take into consideration decor.. Because if you go with the "ugly" church but have to spend more in decor than the other church, it may not even make a financial difference.

    Smiley smile Good luck!

Definitely not your FMIL's church then. Do you have a reception venue booked yet?

Another option is you can decorate that ugly church where your fmil is a member of to make it look prettier

It really isn't "ugly" to me, but you can fix that by decorating, which probably means you're spending $200 or more, so it's not worth it. Is $200 ALL you'd be paying for the more comfortable church? Because if so, that's a drop in the bucket when you think about the comfort of your guests.

I'd also pay for the second church, you definitely need AC and you seem to like the 2nd one a lot better

The 200 seems like it's for the person to open and close the building for you. That's actually very reasonable. Some churches require you to hire their sound person, light person and security...

Definitely pay the $200. Decorating the church is going to take more time and $$$.

Thanks for all the advice so far. The 200 would be additional. Total it would be 450, which like a few people mentioned, isn't much in exchange for comfort. FMIL said they can put fans on but that sounds even worse.

A church is more than a backdrop. It's a choice that sends a message about your beliefs. You don't shop for a church like you shop for a purse.....

    And 450 is a steal.

ROFL! $450. Try $1200 at my church and I'm an active member including assisting my parents in their ministry.

OMG $450? Ha. PAY IT. I'm not getting married in a church, but I'm spending over $900 for the ceremony space.

Celia, yes ma'am. The "ugly church" isn't ugly. Seriously. And the $200 the other church is charging is nothing considering you're not members there.

It's really your choice, but I'd go with the church that has the most meaning for me personally. No air in August might be tough but if you're planning a rather short ceremony, I don't see a problem. I'd rather be inside than outside at a wedding in August.
