Chuppah decoration

Allison, on December 8, 2013 at 11:56 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 12

Hi all,

The venue we're getting married at has a few items available for all weddings, one of them being a chuppah. The chuppah they have is very plain so it would need decoration, and I don't know where to start. We're bulk ordering flowers for the bouquets, centerpieces, etc., so I don't think we'll be using any real flowers for the chuppah.

We have a coordinator through the venue who will do a lot of our decorating, I'm just not sure how much he'll be doing or if my mom or someone else will end up decorating it therefore I'm looking for semi simple decoration suggestions. Thank you!

Hmmm...do you have a picture of it that we can see? That could help us give you more applicable suggestions.

Sorry for the super tiny picture, that's the only one I have from the venue.

    Would something this simple work?

The fact that it's so bare is great because that means there is no real limit on how to decorate it. How stable is the base? Is it going to need something else to help support it in case of wind or anything?

My instant thoughts are lots of flowing fabric tied off in the corners, like in the pic below (minus the flowers since you aren't planning to using any). The side posts that connect in the middle would still show though, which I'm not sure how you would cover them unless you just let the fabric hang down on the sides.

I really like both those ideas, thanks! It will be in a semi enclosed large gazebo/pavilion type structure, so it should be ok even if there's wind, but I will definitely ask about how secure it is. Thanks again!

I thought you'd be interested in this Orthodox write-up on the Chuppah: http://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/476806/jewish/The-Bridal-Canopy-Chuppah.htm

Deborah, thank you for the history! I'm not Jewish and hadn't researched it because it was a very recent idea to possibly research it, but that information is interesting and helpful in regards to how we will decorate it.

If you don't mind me asking, why are you using a chuppah if you aren't Jewish? Is it meant to be used as your wedding arch?

I think I should have technically used the term wedding canopy despite my coordinator referring to it as a chuppah. Apparently it's a popular ceremony item at my venue, regardless of the couple's faith.

Okay, that makes sense Smiley smile

Maybe try Google to get some more ideas, but I would suggest searching under wedding canopy since it will most likely give you more options than chuppah would, such as having a pomander suspended from the top or something.

Yeah, technically the one in your picture would not be a chuppah, since a chuppah is supposed to be open on all four sides. But a decorative frame of some sort is pretty common, regardless of religion.

If you're not trying to make it a kosher chuppah, another possibility would be something hung from the back wall of it. I've seen fabric curtains, or strings of beads or crystals, or various other hanging decorations. See examples, below.

Another alternative is to use lights. You could have fairy lights on the beams, spotlights pointing toward it to highlight the two of you, and/or backlighting as shown in the first picture.
