Travelling over Christmas and New Years will double the price of flights/accommodations since that is when many travel. Can you do a week in between Thanksgiving and Christmas or early January? You will save a lot by avoiding the holidays. And destination won't be mobbed by children off school

I am in the same boat as you. Also, my FH is in the Navy and gets 2 weeks off, but on specific days (over New Year's) so we will be booking then. We re thinking about doing Costa Rica, but are still searching for a perfect place.

Once they were "empty-nesters" with their kids living cross country, my sister & BIL started taking cruises the week between Christmas and New Year's (they typically left on the 26 or 27th). They were usually much cheaper because a lot of people don't want to travel for the holidays.

Try November/December instead. That is the cheapest time of the year to travel to the Caribbean.
