Choosing a dj

Dana, on February 29, 2020 at 1:34 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7
We are beginning to look at DJs for our wedding and this is starting to seem like one of the most difficult vendors to choose! Does cost correlate with talent? I don't want to spend more money if I don't have to, but I also don't want to run the risk of cheaping out and regretting it later. Thank you in advance!

Daughter was extremely happy with her DJ and he was definitely not the most expensive one she talked with. He had great reviews, from her venue, online, and from the people she got to talk with directly (she asked him for referrals who she could call). He knew her venue well, so he was completely familiar with the facility, how they liked the set-up to run, and exactly what he needed to do to be sure all amplified sound was in compliance with the community noise ordinance. And, beyond all that, from the first time daughter talked with him, she felt a strong connection and was confident that he'd do everything he could so they'd have the fun, dance-party type reception that they wanted. He was a huge part of how perfect their wedding was. As a complete bonus, he also kind of talked daughter off a ledge when she was having trouble with another vendor two weeks before the wedding and he happened to call her to check-in about something. Based on his 15+ years of experience, after listening to her concerns, he assured her "two weeks out is always super-stressful, but as soon as she got to the one-week point she'd move into 'I don't give a crap territory' and everything would be awesome from there on out!" She took his advice, and he was completely right! (That man EARNED his tip! Smiley winking lol)

This was honestly my hardest vendor to select too, because you can’t easily see pictures of their work. For ease I booked a dj that played at a wedding I went to last fall.

While I don’t think it’s the easiest person to book, pricing shouldn’t define who you pick. I made a meeting with one of the cheapest DJs in our area and when we met with him and his wife, we connected and felt like they were our friends. They have nothing but good reviews and even did a friend of mine’s wedding (which I found out after we met with them) and she raved about them. Our DJ doesn’t do heavy metal music but is going the extra step to play one or two songs my FH really wants to play. He was the only DJ we met with that we clicked with and like I said, he was the cheapest option. You’ll know when you meet the right one if you haven’t already.

I agree with pricing shouldn’t define who you pick. I could have gone with a cheaper person but I didn’t because the person I found was more personable and responsive and had package deals

We did not choose the most expensive DJ we looked at, and they were great! We ask our venue for recommendations of DJ’s who had played there and were familiar with their location. That ended up being very helpful! I think if you read reviews, talk to your venue, and overall do your research, price shouldn’t be the deciding factor.

I also had this issue! I talked to 6-7 DJs and it took me 2 months to chose 😂 we actually decided to go with the cheapest DJ but not because of price. It’s a smaller DJ company so it had less reviews, but the reviews I read just RAVED about the DJs. I mean paragraph after paragraph about how they did everything in their power (outside of just DJ stuff) to make sure the day was perfect. The other DJ we were going to go with was $200 more, and then $500 more for uplighting. They were a bigger company so had more reviews but they were just standard “oh they were awesome” instead of the paragraphs. We also didn’t like that we had a limit for the amount of “must play” and “don’t play” songs with the more expensive option. Overall, we picked the cheapest because both me and FH meshed better with him and because we have more freedom with how we plan songs and all that.

I know that picking a dj was hard for me too. I originally was going with a dj that played at my nieces birthday party. We did talked about him djing the wedding and he was charging me $750 but he did not get back with me about a contract so I went with my backup dj that was charging me the same price. My backup dj is experienced and very professional and he detailed about what he should do and what i want.
