Hi everyone! My FH is Chinese (from Beijing), and I'm wanting to incorporate elements of his culture into our wedding to make it more multicultural. We thought that it would be nice to do a tea ceremony, and his parents are open to it. When is this typically done? Both sides of our relatives are coming in from out of town and are staying at hotels leading up to the wedding. Could this be done at the rehearsal dinner the night before?? The morning of the wedding?? Or maybe carve out some time during the wedding reception?? I have no clue and have been googling it, but if someone has done it or has seen it done, I'd love some input!! Thanks!!

    Thanks, VC!

I think the guests that we have coming may appreciate seeing another tradition. It seems that this should be relatively easy to pull off, once I figure out a timeline to do it! Now it's time to research Chinese sweets. Smiley winking

I've loved reading this thread! I learned a lot and I love the tradition and symbolism in the tea ceremony. Hope it's beautiful!

Shouldn't be too bad. It would be also nice to use traditional tea cups and tea pots (should be relatively inexpensive) and you can keep it afterwards for special use.

Oh and also, please get nice pillows, you guys will be on your knees haha.

    Have fun!

Chinese desserts can be fun, just think how they will be served. Some of the soups are harder to serve unless it's done at the table.

If I might ask a question for the OP, would your parents be partaking in the tea ceremony as well? I am only curious because I also plan on having a tea ceremony (I'm Chinese, my FH is Caucasian) and I was wondering if my FH's parents should be served tea as well, even though they have no ties to the culture. I'm not sure if this should be done as a formality or if it'd be silly.

ViciousHamster - Same situation as you. My DH is not Chinese. We asked them if they would like to participate or not and explained to them how it worked. They decided they did want to participate and thought it was sweet. Ask them.

Oh yes, also during the banquet/reception you typically will go to each table and individually toast each table. Make sure you only take a small sip unless you're planning on getting smashed ASAP. It kind of sucks because you do it during dinner (or between courses is best).

This was fascinating reading! I love reading about the traditions of other cultures. I had heard of a tea ceremony but had no idea what it entailed. It sounds really lovely.

And Lady Monk, I loved your red dress--how beautiful you looked!
