Children's Meals

Jen101, on July 29, 2015 at 8:04 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

How young is too young for a children's meal and how old is too old??

I am wondering about the 16 month old child, and the 11 year old kid. I REALLY don't want to have to pay for a kid's meal if it's not going to be touched, but I prefer paying for a kid's meal over an adult meal. Opinions??

Maybe ask the parents? Some kids have a taste for "grown up" food

Check with your venue, about their pricing tiers, if they have them. Ours was 2-12 was charged a kids meal, at half the price of an adult meal. 13 and up had to pay the full adult rate - no discount for 5 hours of open bar. There were 3 possible cousins we could have invited, in the 10-12 range, but from past experience with them, knew they would have insisted on an adult meal/pricing, which we didn't want to pay. Their past behavior one of the factors in why we finally decided to go with 21and up .

I'm only having 5 kids there so it was easy to ask the parents what the kids prefer. The 13 and 6 year olds are getting adult meals and the 4 and 7 year old are getting kids meals. The 6 year old is my nephew who loves seafood. I asked him if he'd rather have chicken fingers (kids meal) or crab bisque and steak and crab cakes and he kind of looked at me like...chicken fingers? Really? Lol. Boy has expensive taste.

The 16-month-old may very well just eat off of the parents' plate. Most likely, the 11-year-old will need at least a kid's meal. But you can check with the parents to make sure s/he'll eat whatever is in the kid's meal.

I have 4 kids under 12 years old. They can have either a kids meal or adult. My venue also didn't charge me for them when it came to the open bar. Thank goodness

The 11 year old we are inviting has two younger sisters who are 9 and 7, and I really don't want the mom to push me into getting adult meals for all three of them. I guess it would be the right thing to ask anyway though...

Ask your venue! Mine offers a kids meal (chicken fingers or pasta) AND a teen meal (adult meal at discount since they won't be drinking alcohol). Anyone under 21 can be a teen meal.

Talk with your caterers, you are probably not their first bride with this question and will be super helpful!

I would ask the parent on the 16 month old, but 11 isn't too old for a kid's meal. Most restaurants have their kids' menu 12 and under.

@KD - I wish my venue gave that option, no dice. I had to talk them into letting me do a vendor meal, the same meal as us w/out bar.

My venue decides at what age is a kids meal or an adult meal. I think the cutoff for kids is, 5 and under free 6-11 kids meal, 12 and up adult.

Do you get to decide? Everyone at our reception will eat off the buffet. Under 3 is free. Ages 4-12 are 75% of adult price. What does your caterer allow? That is the deciding factor.

Definitely ask your caterer. We're doing buffet and we could have had a separate children's option for a lesser price but didn't want to worry about a separate menu. We're having tacos and all the kids will like those. Our caterers did knock off some of the price for the kids even though they're not getting a different meal. Same thing for the vendors. It's half the price but they're going through the buffet line too.

There's no need to draw the moms into it. Talk to your caterer. They deal with this all the time. They'll know what to do.

My 9 and 6 year old nephews will be eating adult meals for half the price. The three 3 year old's will eat for free and will have chicken fingers or pasta. You're venue should have pricing.

I would ask your caterer then the parents. I just asked our caterer last week if there was a price difference for children and he told me they don't charge for anyone under 10. We had no idea, and had them added into the budget which we can now remove. There's no harm in asking, you may be pleasantly surprised.

Our venue has a cutoff age for the kids' menus, so we made the decision for them. They do have two food options and I will probably ask the parents what they would prefer food-wise. The less people you can involve in the decision, the better!

Our venue's child's price was 1/2 of the adult's price. and the child's age was 3-11.
