Chiffon for curvey bridesmaid...? Ah!

Sunny, on December 20, 2010 at 5:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

Did anyone or IS anyone using chiffon bridesmaid dresses for curvy bridesmaids? I have one bridesmaid whos very curvy and I want her to be comfortable. We tried on BM dresses & my favorites tend to be chiffon.

I'm thinking this in eggplant: http://www.lizfields.com/Product/Bridesmaid-Dresses/Long-V-Neck-Style-228/

I'm considering letting them choose their own dresses but using the same color/fabric. BUT she tried on a chiffon dress and said it was super unflattering (but it was way too small for her to even really fit...) We aren't going to be able to find one in store that'll fit her so what do I do? Just avoid chiffon and cross them all off my list & go with satin, or what? She really has it in her head that it'll look horrible.

Smiley sad

I can't mix chiffon and satin for the BM- that'd look bad, right?

It's not about the fabric, but the fit. And define curvy- I'm curvy. But you said you can't find one that would fit her in the store- that's not curly, that's plus sized.

Chiffon can look good on a plus sized person if the cut of the fabric is flattering. That dress is cute, but will she have extra back fat that will hang over the top? Will she be uncomfortable with her arms showing that much skin? Some girls are larger and still have a good shape.

Talk to her about cut of the dress. There are some cuts that just aren't flattering to certain body types. It sounds like that was what the issue was with that particular dress she tried on.

Yes, she's plus sized. She's worn strapless dresses at weddings before, so I'm not super concerned about a little skin showing. She also has an optional shawl.

I just feel like once she sees I pick chiffon (if I do) she's going to be sad about it because of the one she tried on.

Chiffon can really go both ways of being flattering or not-regardless of size. ive word a chiffon dress the wasnt tight, but the material just fit close to the body and showed off every bump i had (and im little)...but then in the same wedding, bigger girls were in chiffon dresses that were a different style and were totally flattering on them!

the one you chose i think would be flattering to all shapes

The dress that you're showing is cute, but maybe she's worried about the cut? like with rouging (Sp?) the bumps would be well hidden, but because of the cut of your chosen dress, I understand what she means, it might not be flattering on her (I know for sure it wouldn't be on me)... but then there's spanx? maybe the best thing to do is talk to here about it and ask her about the cut

So what kind of chiffon "cut" is flattering to plus sized girls? You think the one I posted is okay?

So....I am a plus sized girl and I would not look good in that dress(although it is super cute). I am a size 16 and have 40 DD boobs. I would look pregnant in the one you posted. If your BM has any kind of chest she will prob look the same. I would suggest something with a shape built in and not an empire waist. Good luck!

To add, they will probably not all have the same dress.

This may be better for her?

From your list above #2 would probably work the best.

I'm a plus size bride also, and I love chiffon, it's not my dress, but I tried some on and they looked good. You want to find a dress that pulls the eyes towards flattering features and away from what she doesn't like. Like A-line dresses work well with plus size women, Empire dresses are good. Also dresses with sturdy straps or cap sleeves will keep the girls secure. Halter dresses can work if they have enough support.

My girls are wearing chiffon dresses. I chose chiffon because I have BMs in all shapes and sizes. The smallest is like an 8 and the largest is like a 16. The chiffon dresses look good on all of them. The fabric is very loose and it flatters their curves. I would highly suggest chiffon over satin because satin will show every impefection. If she is uncomfortable with the dress, maybe you can keep the same fabric, and just choose a different style, because I have rarely seen anyone look bad in a chiffon dress.

I'm having my bridesmaids in a chiffon dress by Bill Levkoff, color plum. I have ladies of all shapes and sizes and they all loved the chiffon. Here's a pic.

I love Chiffon dresses. I am a bigger girl with big curves and big boobs. I look great in chiffon compared to satin. Satin clings too much. But definitely look into straps. Big girls look better with a dress that does not need to be pulled up all day. I would suggesst A line also!

I'm rather large as well and everytime I have ever worn a chiffon dress I looked pregnant ... What I would reccommend is you take her dress shoppign with you, especially if she will be the hardest one to fit. I was the largest of all the bms in one of my friends weddings and I went shopping with her so we could find a dress that looked good on me and the girls picked out their dresses based on what looked good on me ... I've worn various strapless dresses and every dress has been a-line satin and I thought I looked good ...

This is the dress that I really loved for my BMs. I was so excited to have them go and try it on. It looked great on 2 of them but on the third (who is far from plus size, but is heavier thru the chest and stomach than my other girls)it looked like a tent and was not flattering at all. I think it's more the style of the dress you picked versus the fabric in general.

Okay 1 - dress is beautiful 2- color is great! I'm an eggplant bride as well! 3 - I am plus size and in August I wore a light bright chiffon dress in my friends wedding. It's most def about the fit. The dress actually looked really nice on all the girls there were three that were plus size anf myself. As long as it's in the right size and altered properly she will look fine.

That is true if she can get it altered to fit her shape, she will look stunning ... I did that with one of the chiffon dresses I was forced to wear in a wedding ... and I guess it didn't look to God awful but then again that was 5 years ago and I was a twig almost ...

I have 4 bridesmaids...all 4 are different body styles. So, I have chosen the color and they get to pick the dress that they feel comfortable in...just a thought!

I think Chiffon can be super flattering on any size woman she just needs to find a style she likes have her try on several ... Satin however if not as forgiving the sheen shows off everything you don't want seen
