Checking Account Questions...

MELN, on February 21, 2012 at 10:06 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

I’m running out of checks for my checking account, and was just about to re-order until I realized, I have a little over 4 months before the wedding/new last name. My question is, can I still order checks with my maiden name and still be able to use them after the wedding? Also, me and FH just opened a joint account and we have not ordered checks yet, the account is in my current name, but should I put my new name on the checks now even though it hasn’t changed yet? Will it help any, I plan on keeping my maiden name as my second middle name (yes I know it will be long, but I refuse to lose my last name, very sentimental to me)???

Depending on how many checks you need between now and July, you may be able to go into the bank and get a few temp checks with your maiden name and then order a full box with your married name in July.

You can still use your maiden name on checks I think. When I was a cashier I saw it frequently.

    Have you asked your bank?

Mine required my name to be legally changed before they'd change any of their documents, including my checks.

I haven't talked to anyone at the bank yet. Just dawned on me while I was getting ready to re-order my checks. Thanks for your help Ladies, I will stop by the bank after I leave work.

I also ran into this problem. I crossed off the information that wasn't correct, even my address changed, made the changes and then initialed by the changes. At one point only my first name was correct! lol But they still took it. However I had to show them my marriage license and new drivers license before I could change my name with them. But this was just my bank, not sure what your bank will require or allow.

I work at a bank and for us it is totally fine. It really doesn't matter what is printed on the checks as long as the signature cards and account info is up to date. We even have some customers who use the same checks after they are married but throw a return address label over their names. People do this if they change their addresses too. We don't do temporary checks anymore (depends on your bank).

My bank requires a legal name change in order to change the name on my account and add the new name to our joint account. It made for a pain cashing wedding checks we got from people. Many of them wrote the checks to both of us using my new last name. Luckily we were able to just put them all in the joint account. We both had to be present at the bank for that.

I used to work retail and the only requirement we had for accepting checks was a valid drivers license and change of information card if something didn't match the check. This may vary from state to state, but in Maryland you get a paper card for change of name or address to keep with your license until you renew again.

Very true with the checks written out to both of you as wedding gifts, etc. For the bank that I work, we will deposit it into a joint account if your name is not legally changed if you bring us a copy of the marriage certificate which we keep on file. It is a pain in the butt for people that don't have a joint account prior to the wedding when people write out checks to both the bride and groom.

I totally agree w/Ellen B...Don't order new checks until your name change! Maybe you can just use straight debit or money order or cashier checks, or just plain cash in some situations! It can do until later!!
