Cheapest booze?? OH,IN,PA,MD,VA,WI brides!

Waychox3, on March 23, 2016 at 12:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 34

My awesome fils are paying for the bar and since our wedding is in their barn it's obviously so.ething we have to bring in. Liquor in MI is pretty expensive and we have a few trips planned on to D.C. and NC planned and FH and I live 1.5 hours from WI, plus ffil is willing to drive to OH and we go through IN 2 times a month. So I was hoping some of you ladies could tell me which of these states have the cheapest prices?

Drive to Delaware and buy it tax free. That's what I'm doing and I live in MD.

Not Va. We have Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) stores and the pricing is decided by the state for tax purposes.

Try DC or MD Costcos for wholesale pricing. Just make sure you go to the right county. Montgomery doesn't allow it but say PG does.

Not VA either. I would agree with Joan B. Try MD. And I know MI you can by liquor anywhere (i.e. gas stations ironically) but in MD you have to go to a liquor store. Just wanted to be sure you were aware of that. Coming from MI to MD for college that was hard for me to grasp.

NJ over PA, I know that. And places have sales on certain things, FYI! My mom bought the booze for my brother's wedding, and would always look at like Roger Wilko's ads for sales. I had no idea that booze could go on sale, but apparently it does! Sorry to not fully answer the question, but I wanted to recommend that! Maybe Delaware? No sales tax. Not sure how that works with liquor other places, but for example I know my brother used to always try and get me to buy him cigarettes in DE because of that. Not sure how liquor works with taxes. (should I know this stuff??) ETA PS I did not buy him his cigarettes, but sometimes he would talk FH into it. lol.

Liquor stores in DC are cheap and plentiful, but they may not be in the most desirable of places! Generally, try NE (Brookland) or SE (Capitol Hill) DC.

If you go to MD, DON'T do Montgomery County! We have some bizarre alcohol laws and taxes.

I think we'll do Total Wine, in either Laurel/Baltimore MD or VA - though the DE idea sounds interesting!

ETA: I think you can buy liquor in grocery stores in WV...at least you used to be able to do so. No ABC stuff to worry about. Try Charles Town or Berkeley Springs.

You can't buy booze at Costcos or similar stores in MD due to our archaic liquor laws. Only at a specialty liquor store.

Though gas stations are puzzlingly allowed to sell beer and wine, yet you cant grab a bottle of wine at the grocery store. .. it makes no sense, tbh.

@Niki, that's the thing I miss about living in DC. I could pick up wine or beer for dinner at the corner Safeway or whatnot. In MoCo, nope! It is ridiculous. Scoot over to PG County and you can get your liquor at drive-thrus!

WV you can buy it at Walmart, Target etc.. Here in my county we have 11% tax which sucks. I am not sure about other WV counties. Since I am on the border of VA and MD prices are a lot higher. I think Frederick or Washington county in MD are priced well.

As someone who has lived in MoCo my entire life I always forget that outside of this bubble you can buy beer/wine/liquor at most places. I walk into a grocery store in another state and I'm like "Whoa what is this magical place?!"

I've seen some wines in Ohio about two dollars cheaper than Illinois. Keep your eyes peeled for sales at Binny's trader joes and Costco on IL. I saw wine at whole foods in Wheaton,Il for 45 a case that's 3$ a bottle

I think Indiana has lower taxes. At least that's the case for tobacco and gas, so I figure just as much. From the Skyway, you can get to Indiana in 20 minutes.

Yes, Delaware is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from MD and PA! Do the tax-free shopping thing! If you get near Elkton, MD, and go right over the state line into DE, there's a liquor store right there. I'm guessing that's not the only place along the border where businesses take advantage of MD residents who want tax-free alcohol. Just be aware that alcohol is only sold in liquor stores in DE. It is illegal to sell it at any other tyoe of store.

Rachel have you thought about Canada? Some friends of ours did that for their reception but it was a few years ago - I don't know how all the duty free stuff works now or if you have the enhanced license?

We went to Indiana from Michigan to get liquor and beer, I think the taxes are cheaper, but you also don't have to pay bottle deposits.

We will driving through IN on Sunday to get back to Chicago. I know for a fact that Cook and DuPage counties in IL have insane taxes that make it more expensive than MI. I can buy a 12 pack of beer in MI with the deposit and it's still cheaper than buying it in Chicago.
