Charge for Cake Tasting?

I spoke with a local baker about cake tastings, and she said they charge $25 for one. I found this really off putting, and it makes me not even want to try them. We went to a group cake tasting at a different bakery last weekend that was free. Another bake shop I spoke to is free.... heck, our caterer let us attend TWO food tastings for FREE. Has anyone else dealt with this? Did you pay for any tastings? I just find it so tacky, like you can’t afford the bites of cake to potentially land a client? For $25 I should get a whole cake

I’m in NY and both my caterer and baker charge for the tastings. Our baker has different options for tastings from a 20 min, -60min consultation each varying in price. We are paying 50 for ours (60 minutes) and we get to try 12 flavors. I do believe it goes towards our total cake fee though. But charging is definitely not uncommon. Some other vendors I’ve contacted didn’t charge and others did. But if yours is only giving you a small variety to choose from perhaps keep the search ongoing till you find a better deal.

Honestly, if the place was charging for tastings, I figured the actual cake would we very expensive and out of the budget so we didn’t bother with places that charged extra!

She quoted me $375 for a cake that would feed 94 people, which is a 12”, 10” and 6” tier. Almost $4 a slice! We’re going to look around and see before we pay them. They’re the only one so far that charges.
