Charge for Cake Tasting?

Suzie, on January 25, 2020 at 10:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

I spoke with a local baker about cake tastings, and she said they charge $25 for one. I found this really off putting, and it makes me not even want to try them. We went to a group cake tasting at a different bakery last weekend that was free. Another bake shop I spoke to is free.... heck, our caterer let us attend TWO food tastings for FREE. Has anyone else dealt with this? Did you pay for any tastings? I just find it so tacky, like you can’t afford the bites of cake to potentially land a client? For $25 I should get a whole cake Smiley atonished

We didn’t have to pay for our tasting, but I heard some bakeries do charge for one. I guess it’s your preference, if you don’t want to pay for a tasting, I’m sure the other bakeries that don’t charge have good cakes as well.

I think it varies by location. In LA almost everywhere I talked to charged a fee. The baker we ended up going with did charge $25, but we got 6 flavors of cake that were each essentially a mini cake (we didn’t even come close to finishing it all!), plus 20 filings, and 5 frostings. The money we paid for the tasting also went toward our total order.

We had to pay for all our cake tasting contingent upon the price being deducted from the cost if we chose the vendor.

We had to pay for ours. It'm sure it just depends on location but definitely not uncommon.

We did 4 tastings only one was free. Sadly it isn't uncommon in our area to have to pay for tastings. We saw prices range from 25-50.00

Yes, I’ve heard of bakeries doing that. Some couples like hopping around from bakery to bakery for tastings. So, paying shows if a couple is serious because tastings take up staff’s time. I’ve seen some tastings give little bites where others give full slices where you can take the extra with you. So there are different levels.

I guess it depends on your location. We never had to pay for our cake tastings and I haven’t heard of anywhere in our area (mid sized city) charging.

We had to pay for ours, but the money went towards our cake if we ordered from them. I think it's to try and make sure you are serious going into the tasting.

Did you ask if the $25 goes towards your final bill. I wouldn't be off put by it but some bakers do it.

We had to pay $25 for every cake tasting we went to. The bakery we chose put the $25 towards our deposit.

We never did a formal tasting. We found our baker at a craft fair bought 1 of each of the 6 cupcakes she had and demolished them all the same day emailed her that evening to ask if she did wedding cakes.

Our bakery charged $25 for a tasting. Ours is also a very upscale bakery in town. I think most of the bakeries in town charge a fee. It also depends on where you are located too

I don’t find it too weird. Usually the tasting fee can be put toward the price of the cake if you go with them

The amount of time that a baker probably has to put into a tasting. As well as product. Seems like a fair idea to me. Especially if it comes off the bill at the end.
That way you won't have wasted their time when they could have been making money if you were just looking for free cake.

Wow, that’s a lot of options! This place only offers 3, we can do 3 cake flavors, 3 fillings and 3 frostings. Tasting fee is completely separate as well, which is a bummer.

I guess that makes sense. The fee does not go toward our bill, it’s completely separate. Lucky that yours did!

Thanks, everyone. Good to know it’s not unheard of, but still unsure about it. We only get three options of cake, filling and frosting, and the charge does not go towards an order. Guess we will see!

Oh that sucks. I know some cake testers do that but if that's the case then I would see what does a $25 tasting looks like. but if you've already found some place that can do it for free girl save your money where you can. We have the Publix grocery store in my area and a lot of people get their cakes from there but they're going to charge $110 just for one 10 in when I can go to another Baker and get a two-tier 6-inch and 8-inch you can feed more people and look cuter.

Yeah there were so many combinations lol we ended up choosing red velvet with whipped cream cheese mouse filling and white chocolate Buttercream frosting for our tiered cake and chocolate with raspberry purée and raspberry mouse filling and dark chocolate ganache frosting for the sheet cake. Their cakes were sooo amazing!
