Changing name and flight booking

Hi! New here and hoping for advice. I’m getting married early April. I am planning to book a flight to see family mid-May and want to book flights while there are seats available. I have to book with Southwest because I’m using points. I know I’m changing my last name, but I can’t tell how long the process will take (especially because I make mistakes and sometimes need to do go back to offices with correct materials). Should I wait to book the flight until my name is definitely changed? Should I book the flight with my expected name and hope the timing fits? Is there another option I’m missing?

    You will be fine using your drivers license or ID for booking flights and traveling with your current name since this is the valid name you have established with the state. The other option is just to wait to start your name-change process until after the flight, but that should not necessary.

    I would book with my current name and start the name change process after you return from your trip. That way you don’t have to worry about the flight selling out or be rushed with the name change.

    The name change process takes time!! Even if you pay to expedite everything, that would be a very stressful and tight turnaround! (Getting your marriage certificate can take a few weeks, then you need to change your social security card first before you can change your photo ids.) Book your flight in your current name and wait to change your driver's license until after your trip!
