Changing from zipper back to corset??

Lauren, on March 25, 2015 at 8:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

Has anyone done this with their dress? If so, what were your experiences? Dress was tight in the midsection when I bought it in October, and despite eating better and exercising, it's still tightSmiley sad I have my first alterations appt next week, and I'm thinking of asking them to change to a corset back instead, just to give me some more breathing room! I'm still going to keep working out/ eating better, but I think corset back will give me some piece of mind.

I used to work in a bridal salon and alteration team does this often for brides. It's perfect, if your weight fluctuates a little. Just find a good seamstress to do it.

I'm doing this...not sure what the cost will be and I want to make sure that the corset makes a V and not look like the zipper was just removed.

I know davids bridal can do this. A dress I bought (then returned haha) were going to change the zipper back into a corset. I don't remember the price a couple hundred though I think??

I agree corset back sounds like a great idea for you. I had a corset back and the downfall was getting it on exact right on the day of the wedding.

My bridesmaids and I even practiced and could not do it correctly after the seamstress showed us how. I panicked a few days before and my stylist said she could help me.

Well she did, but it still did not fit right because of the lacing up.

Just a word of caution and experience.

I ended up wearing it as is, but the lacing was off and the fit was wrong across the bust, I just had to live with it but I see it in the pictures

I have a zipper and its a little tight. but for me I want it that way so I don't have to worry about anything becoming loose lol. Also, it now has that nice backing. Just really watch what you eat the week before the wedding. No carbs

Don't worry about it at all! It's quite common to do it.

In fact, a corset will give you a better fit than a zipper dress Smiley smile

I had a zipper back and mine was a little tight and my seamstress altered it to a corset back and it looks awesome! You can't even tell that it used to have a zipper. It only cost around $125 for me and was totally worth it.

I had the option of choosing my dress in a corset or zipper when I first picked it so I do not know how much it would cost to do it. But I do agree with the other ladies about making the change because it will accomodate itself to your figure which is what you want.

I'm probably changing mine, but Stupid question...When you alter a zipper to a corset back, will it give the same shaping effect as a dress that already had a corset back? Does boning have to be added to do that?

@lucy , no boning is necessary, this would just add some extra space to the back.

And as far as the shape of the dress goes, it would fit the same or better! Zippers are based on the shape of a mannequin, not yours, the corset gives you the option to tighten up or loosen up where needed.

    Good luck ladies!

I was also lucky to fall in love with a corset backed dress from the start. But the peace of mind that the fit would be exact and I had a little wiggle room was amazing. Just be sure that you take someone (or two or three) with you to the fittings to learn how this is done. I advise recording the instructions to avoid day-of confusion!

Well, I loved my corset, however, on my wedding day none of the bridesmaids wanted to lace me up and the one that did had no idea what she was doing and my dress poked out in all sorts of weird ways....I really wish I had just done a zipper. I kept asking her to tighten the corset, which she couldn't figure out, I started to get really stressed out, we were running out of time so I didn't know what to do and just kept it, but now my photos show a very bunched up dressSmiley sad(( Keep in mind that NO ONE wants to mess up the brides day, so bridesmaids are reluctant to help with anything, they would rather sit in the corner touching up their own makeup and chatting. So the less you depend on other people the day of the better.....get a zipper!!!!
