Catholic wedding question

I have to ask because I randomly see posts about this and I just don't understand. Catholic people can't get married outside? What is the reasoning behind this? I'm not Catholic but I just don't get it and would like to understand why does whether or not you get married inside a church or not...

I have to ask because I randomly see posts about this and I just don't understand. Catholic people can't get married outside? What is the reasoning behind this? I'm not Catholic but I just don't get it and would like to understand why does whether or not you get married inside a church or not matter? What is it that makes it not okay to get married outside if you are Catholic?

I am a Catholic, & we use the word, Pastor. He is the priest, or in our case, Monsignor, who leads the parish. Here is a web page of a local parish in my area. http://standrewdh.com/index.cfm?load=page&page=150

As others have stated, matrimony is a sacrament of vocation. What is a sacrament? I can give you the old version: "A sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace." We view marriage as sacred & as such it should take place in our parish church where there is a Eucharistic prescence in the tabernacle. Chances are the bride/groom has also been Baptized, rec'd 1st Reconcilliation, Eucharist and Confirmation inside that parish church. Outside places are just not as dignified. also, most have a Nuptial Mass, which needs to be inside the church.

Because it is a sacrament, Catholic couples must go through a rigorous process to see if in fact the couple demonstrates the right frame of mind to enter into a holy union that is not to be divided.

First, I am a practicing Catholic, and the lead Priest of a church is called a pastor, and the second is called an associate pastor. That is a term that Catholics use.

    To address your question Monica..

As was already mentioned, the Catholic church teaches that marriage is a sacrament and strongly upholds the teaching on the sanctity of marriage. The reason that most priests will not marry a couple outside of the church is to avoid presenting a picture to non-Catholics present that the Catholic view on marriage is the same as that of the secular view on marriage. That being said, some priests, with the approval of the bishop will marry outside, but it is usually difficult to get that approval.

Carole, your "old version" of a sacrament brought me right back to weekly classes before Confirmation...love it.
